Australian actor and film producer Cate Blanchett is getting slammed by frustrated locals of a secluded seaside Cornish village for "making their lives hell and driving away tourists" due to the "non-stop drilling and banging" at her renovated mansion.
Blanchett had purchased a £1.6 million cottage close to the sea in Mawgan Porth in 2020 with her husband Andrew Upton, as per The Metro. However, they soon decided to demolish it to create a five-bedroom "eco home" complete with a pool, which has since received a lot of noise complaints.
The village has been dubbed "Hollywood-on-Sea" because of its popularity with A-list actors, including Aquaman star Jason Momoa, 50 Shades of Grey star Jamie Dornan, Jason Statham, and Gary Barlow, all of whom own or rent properties in the area.
Cornish village locals blast Cate Blanchett for construction noise on her property
Local Cornish villagers have complained about Cate Blanchett and the "noisy building work" affecting their standard of living and an increase in traffic from huge lorries congesting the area, as per The Sun.
Three years after purchasing the cottage near the seafront in Mawgan Porth, four miles from Newquay, Cate Blanchett and her husband Andrew Upton decided to reconstruct the cottage into an eco home.
Locals have expressed their discontent about the noise, saying:
"When you open a window you hear drilling. It makes our lives a misery."
Another person stated:
"Tourism’s essential here. That disruption hasn’t made the owner very popular."
The Hollywood residents have raised suspicion amongst the locals for the past few years as the area was dubbed "Hollywood-on-Sea" and celebrities like Cate Blanchett, Jason Momoa, and Jason Statham started buying properties in Cornish Village.
Locals had previously claimed that their idyllic area was being "destroyed" by the influx, as per MSN.
The residents had revealed earlier this year, how unaffordable and "out of touch" the million-pound homes being built were and how clueless tourists were complaining about the smell of cow dung in the countryside, after trying to visit the popular "Hollywood" landmark!
Susan Schofield, a 65-year-old owner of farmland in the area, explained that she was surprised by the amount of new arrivals complaining about the countryside and being oblivious to rural life, as per The Mirror.
"They don't seem to have any idea that this is the countryside. I have had complaints when I put cows in my field because people don't like the smell or they expect to be able to walk across my land whenever they want. People treat it like Disneyland sometimes, like it's only here for the tourists but it's not, people live and work here," she said.
Mrs. Schofield added that she now refrained from visiting the beach altogether during the summer months as it's too busy.
Residents also claimed that "Cornwall's best kept secret" was on the brink of being overrun by second homeowners who are knocking down traditional 1930s bungalows to build "James Bond-esque Lego blocks," much like Cate Blanchett's house which nobody can afford, as reported by MSN.
According to Metro, Cornwall has become the most popular destination in the United Kingdom for a second home, with 6,080 holiday homes used by 14,230 people.
The top two properties in Mawgan Porth, one which is not even built yet, are on sale for £2.9 million and £2.25 million as per the Real Estate agent listings, which confirm the local's concerns.
Cate Blanchett has not released any statements for clarification about the noise complaints yet.
