“I realized there’s another part of my life out there that I want to carry on exploring.” “I miss learning other languages. I miss going to other countries and putting on shows,” said Trevor Noah.

On September 29, 2022, Noah asked for a few extra minutes during that night's show and revealed that, after seven years as host of The Daily Show, he would be leaving the show at an unspecified time in the future.

After returning to stand-up comedy, he yearned to go back to seeing shows abroad and learning new languages. The following month, it was confirmed that Noah's final show would air on Thursday, December 8, 2022.

What was the announcement by Trevor Noah?

On December 6, stand-up comedian Trevor Noah made some tragic announcements. After seven years, Noah announced that his tenure as host of Comedy Central's "The Daily Show" is coming to an end in a video statement posted to Twitter.

"It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s something that I never expected," Noah says in the video. "I found myself thinking throughout the time of everything we’ve gone through: the Trump presidency, the pandemic, just the journey, more pandemic, and I realize that after seven years, my time is up."

After Noah's video was shared on Twitter, the Paramount Global Cable Network released the following statement: "We are grateful to Trevor for our amazing partnership over the past seven years. With no timetable for his departure, we’re working together on next steps. As we look ahead, we’re excited for the next chapter in the 25+ year history of "The Daily Show" as it continues to redefine culture through sharp and hilarious social commentary, helping audiences make sense of the world around them," the statement said.

How was Trevor Noah’s tenure on The Daily Show?

Noah took over as host of The Daily Show on September 28, 2015, as Comedy Central had previously announced in March 2015. Internet attention was drawn to jokes he had made on his Twitter account after he was named Stewart's replacement.

Some of these jokes were criticized for being offensive to women, while others were called out for being antisemitic or making fun of the Holocaust. Noah responded by tweeting: "To reduce my views to a handful of jokes that didn't land is not a true reflection of my character, nor my evolution as a comedian."

Comedy Central backed Noah and issued the following statement: "Like many comedians, Trevor Noah pushes boundaries; he is provocative and spares no one, himself included... To judge him or his comedy based on a handful of jokes is unfair. Trevor is a talented comedian with a bright future at Comedy Central." Noah faced further criticism, after old stand-up routines featuring jokes about Aboriginal women and the Marikana massacre have reappeared on video.

The Daily Show under Noah, according to Comedy Central's president, was the top show for millennials. After Stewart was replaced by Noah, viewership dropped by 37%.

James Poniewozik of The New York Times praised him and the show's writers, saying, "Mr. Noah's debut was largely successful, but it was also because of the operating system—the show's writing—running under the surface." He received less positive reviews from other critics, with Salon writing, "Jon Stewart created a national treasure. Noah has dulled its knife, weakened the satire, and let the powerful run free." The number of viewers tuning in each night had fallen to less than half of what it had been at the end of Stewart's run by 2017, but millennial viewers continued to be loyal, and Comedy Central extended Noah's contract to host The Daily Show through 2022.

After Rishi Sunak was elected prime minister of the United Kingdom in October 2022, Noah asserted that there was a racial backlash against a person of Indian ancestry filling that position. English author Tom Holland stated: "As ever, the inability of American liberals to understand the world beyond the US in anything but American terms is a thing of wonder." Sunak's spokesperson insisted, in response to Noah's claims, that the U.K. is not a racist country.

To which Noah responded that he never made a statement about the country as a whole, only about "some people."
