Bob Arum has revealed why he does not like the idea of challenging for the Undisputed champion. The Top Rank promoter was at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the face-off between Shakur Stevenson and Oscar Valdez. In an interview with Fighthub TV, he spoke about why he dislikes the idea of becoming an Undisputed champion in any weight class:

"No, Undisputed is stupid for me, because, like Josh Taylor pointed out, if you are Undisputed and you have all four belts, you're giving twelve percent of your purse away. So who needs that you know? Maybe you want maybe more than one title, maybe have two, but to break your back and go after four titles and put up with stupid mandatories makes no sense."

Take a look at Bob Arum's interview in the video below:

Arum was responding to a question about setting up the winner of Stevenson vs. Valdez for a shot at becoming the Undisputed champion. It seems as though the Top Rank CEO is not interested in making either of his fighters Undisputed for monetary reasons. A major drawback of having all the belts is that the bodies order the champions to fight mandatories or give up their belts. Often, these mandatories end up being the biggest threats for the champion.

As we witnessed in the case of George Kambosos Jr. and Jack Catterall, these mandatories may not be the biggest names in the division. However, they definitely have what it takes to pull off an upset.

Bob Arum says Shakur Stevenson vs. Oscar Valdez fight reminds him of previous bouts

While talking to the media following the face-off between Shakur Stevenson and Oscar Valdez, Bob Arum spoke about which fight Stevenson vs. Valdez reminded him of. In the same interview with Fighthub TV, he said:

"This looks to me a lot like the old Barrera, Marquez, Morales fights that we enjoyed so many years ago. I mean these guys are really, really terrific fighters, and you know, it's gonna be a very very exciting fight. The presale has been enormous. So, people realise that what a good fight it is."

The fight between Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik Morales is considered one of the greatest trilogies in boxing history. The Barrera vs. Juan Manuel Marquez as well, was an action-packed slugfest that entertained crowds thoroughly. We can only hope that the fight between Stevenson and Valdez can be that good. It will be interesting to watch how this fight compares to the classics.
