Devin Haney is pursuing legal action against his previous opponent, Ryan Garcia, following the one-year ban on the former champion due to being tested positive for Ostarine.
'King Ryan' defeated 'The Dream' via majority decision on April 20, but the bout was overturned by the New York State Athletic Commission over Garcia's usage of Ostarine, which is a performance-enhancing drug recognized in the World Anti Doping Agency's 2024 prohibited list.
Michael Benson, the editor for talkSPORT, reported via X that Haney is adamant about taking Garcia to court to recover the money he would have made had he not lost the match:
"Devin Haney has declared that he's planning to take further legal action against Ryan Garcia following his one-year drugs ban. Haney is adamant he would be earning more for his next fight had the Garcia situation never happened and believes the Sandor Martin purse bids show this to be true: “My lawyers will do what they've gotta do to prove that in court against Ryan. We will take legal action because it has affected me - not only financially, but mentally and everything.”
NYSAC's suspension of the 25-year-old is a relief to the Nevada resident as his record is returned to the status of 'undefeated' following a 'no-contest' ruled by the commission.
The history of Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney involves trashtalking, weight bullying, drug use and conspiracy theories
Ryan Garcia is known for two things: quick hands and even quicker insults. Before their bout in Brooklyn in April, the two had been going back-and-forth on social media for quite some time.
'King Ryan' called 'The Dream' a weight bully, and while the Californian has admitted to using drugs, he alleged that Haney uses shady tactics to make weight. Promoting their much-anticipated bout, Garcia vehemently talked about kids and their maltreatment and other unfathomable atrocities he witnessed at a secret-society club meeting.
Later, the 25-year-old claimed he only wanted to direct attention he was getting to issues he thinks needed to be addressed. When Garcia came in 3.2 pounds over the weight limit, Haney contemplated canceling the bout.
Their trashtalking continued after the fight as both accused the other of cheating. Now that the beef still hasn't been settled, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the two boxing stars.
