What's the story?
2008 Olympic bronze medallist and professional boxer Vijender Singh is set to face British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight champion Rocky Fielding in a title fight on March 30, 2018 in the United Kingdom.
Sources close to the event have confirmed the development to Sportskeeda and Vijender could add another title to his tally in what will be his 10th fight since turning professional.
In case you didn't know
Since turning pro, Singh has registered a 9-0 winning record. In his last bout, Singh defeated WBO Oriental Super Middleweight Champion Zulpikar Maimaitiali in a double title fight in Mumbai.
The heart of the matter
Back in August, Vijender defeated Chinese boxer Maimaitiali in what was a nail-biting affair. Vijender exhibited class and experience during the 10 intense rounds, this retaining the WBO Asia Pacific Super Middleweight title and also claiming the WBO Oriental Super Middleweight title.
Fielding, on the other end of the scale, has had an equally successful run and has a win-loss record of 25-1. The Briton needed only a single round to dominate David Brophy and take home the Commonwealth super-middleweight title in September 2017.
What's next?
Vijender Singh had earlier stated that his next bout will be scheduled on December 16th but did not mention who his opponent will be. With this recent announcement, it is likely that he will not box this year.
Fielding will be on the undercard of Tony Bellew’s rematch against David Haye next month. The 30-year-old has also been confirmed for the bill on December 17 at London’s O2 Arena, exclusively live on Sky Sports Box Office. He will face off against former light-heavyweight Erik Skoglund with the vacant WBC Silver crown at stake.
Sportskeeda's Take
This match should be a real test of Vijender's ability, given his opponent's formidable record. It promises to be a fascinating battle and we can't wait for it to come soon enough!
