Before he joined the professional wrestling world, Bob Backlund was an insanely talented amateur competitor. In a world where MMA stars constantly try to cut weight and fight in a lower class, Backlund went UP in weight to challenge heavyweights in college. He was undefeated in amateur wrestling for the entire year of 1971.
Backlund would become a pro wrestler in 1973, and is one of the longest reigning WWF Champions of all time, holding the belt for over three years. Unexpectedly, he came out of retirement in his 40s to challenge and defeat Bret the Hitman Hart for another WWE title run.
Yes, Bob Backlund is one of the legendary greats of the sport, but he has one unfortunate mantle: that of never winning a WrestleMania match. His first loss was in less than four minutes to Scott "Razor Ramon" Hall, and his second was to Bret Hart in a highly entertaining I Quit match marred by the screwjob ending. Special referee Roddy Piper ended the match even though Backlund never uttered the words "I Quit." It's a somewhat ignominious caveat for an otherwise stellar wrestling career.
