What's the story?
Impact Wrestling held some tapings at the Universal Studios of Orlando, Florida and saw major title changes. First, Austin Aries beat Eli Drake for the World Championship and now Matt Sydal has beaten Japan superstar Taiji Ishimori to capture the X-Division title.
In case you didn't know...
Matt Sydal spent the early years of his career in the independent circuit before signing with WWE in 2008. He joined the ECW brand under the name Evan Bourne and then the Raw roster where he had a pretty good run until 2014. He returned to Impact Wrestling last April and defeated Trevor Lee.
The heart of the matter
According to the fans who were present at the Impact Wrestling Tapings, Matt Sydal defeated Taiji Ishimori in a spectacular bout that will air on Pop TV in the upcoming weeks. The former Evan Bourne is now both the X-Division Champion and the Impact Grand Champion. We don't know if the belts will be unified but in a recent interview, Don Callis stated that major changes will be made regarding this matter.
What's next?
Matt Sydal is on a roll and needs to capitalize this moment by becoming the new face of the X-Division. The old times are gone and with Impact Wrestling rebranding itself, Matt can very well be the face of this change while delivering some amazing matchups. His 'Shooting Star Press' is still one of the best in the world today.
Author's take
I think that Matt Sydal is a total package and was pretty wasted in his WWE run. He needs to be pushed more on Impact Wrestling and has the spotlight he deserves after putting his body on the line for all these years. He could also very well be World Championship material.
