What's the story?
Impact Wrestling Vice-president Don Callis has confirmed that the Impact Wrestling has decided to retire the Impact Grand Championship following the latest television tapings.
In case you didn't know...
The Impact Grand Championship was first introduced in August or 2016 as a replacement for the Impact King of The Mountain Championship. On 2nd October 2016, former WWE star Damien Sandow aka Aron Rex was crowned the inaugural Grand Champion after defeating Eddie Edwards. Over the course of these past 2 years, there have been a total of 7 Impact Grand Champions Drew Galloway, Ethan Carter III, Matt Sydal, and Moose who won the title on two different occasions.
The heart of the matter
During the latest Impact television tapings, Matt Sydal decided to award his Impact Grand Title to Impact commentator Josh Mathews, crowning him as the new champion in the process.
However, Impact Wrestling's Executive Vice-president Don Callis has addressed on Twitter that the idea and concept of the Impact Grand Title was a bad decision in the first place, and Callis has also confirmed that the title will now be retired. Additionally, Callis stated in a recent tweet that the Impact Grand Title shouldn't have been introduced in the first place and claimed that the round ideas were the most suboptimal ideas in Impact Wrestling history. Callis also claimed that most of the fans hated the idea of the Impact Grand Title.
What's next?
With the retirement of the Impact Grand Title, it is safe to assume that the Impact Wrestling management will now introduce a brand new mid-card title in order to replace the Impact Grand Championship.
Author's Take
I completely agree with Don Callis here, and I think that the Impact Grand Title's concept was really lame in the first place. However, I do hope that Impact manages to reintroduce a new mid-card title, as it continues to head towards a very significant and successful direction.
