The India Women's Rugby Team were left visibly heartbroken after finishing the Women's Asia Rugby Emirates Sevens Trophy 2024 as the runner-up. They lost to the Philippines 5-7 in the final at Kathmandu, Nepal. With that, they have also missed out on getting promoted to the Asia Rugby Sevens Series.
India would have wanted to get off to a much better start in the all-important fixture, wanting to clinch an early advantage. However, the Philippines was way too active and carried great intent right through the first half. They hardly gave the opponent's defense any scope and presented no opportunities for India's attack.
The Indians were left with not too many answers. finishing the first half trailing 0-7. The match could have gone even worse for India, but they showed great will to make a comeback in the second half. The Philippines were put under much more pressure as their lead was brought down to 7-5, but it was a bit too late.
Their dominance in the initial phase of the match proved enough for the Philippines to become the champions. With this win, they have made it into the Asia Rugby Sevens Series. For India, the loss comes as a setback, but the team shall take great pride in their journey right up until the final.
India Women's Rugby Team goes on sensational run to make it into final
The Indian team can be proud of putting up a dominant show right through the tournament. India stormed into the final after winning all three of their Group F fixtures. They appeared extremely determined and focused as they made into the semifinal with two great wins and a walkover.
India looked like an extremely formidable unit as they went about their business with much ease in each of the three group games. They kicked off with a brilliant performance against Sri Lanka, defeating the Island nation 29-10.
The Indian team then went on to beat Indonesia 17-10 before completely outclassing Iran 20-0. They carried their confidence into the semifinal today (October 5) and overcame Guam with a 24-7 margin.
The loss in the final shall not take away much from the team's overall performance in the tournament.
