Many marathons are held all around the world and people not only run marathons in their own cities or countries. They travel across countries to run their favourite ones and try out new ones. Marathons are physically and psychologically challenging.
You need to dig in deep in your physical and mental reserves to prepare for the marathon and finally run one. Then there are parameters to measure – time taken, completion status, physical state post marathon etc. It is definitely a blessing if the course inspires the runner.
Here is a list of five marathons that will definitely push you to give your best.
#1 Big 5 Marathon, South Africa – The Wild Marathon
Why – It takes place in the Entabeni Game Reserve in South Africa. It is is a challenging race. You run through dirt roads, uneven surfaces and steep slopes.
But the course is breathtaking as it traverses through the South African Savannah and you can be in close quarters with the Big five – elephants, buffaloes, leopards, lions and rhinoceroses and other wildlife such as zebras and giraffes.
So, you run a marathon and also go on a safari! The marathon is safe as long as you stick to the route which is closely watched by helicopters and armed rangers.
#2 Athens Classic Marathon – The Authentic One
Why – Athens is where it all started. The course for this marathon is across the same route that Pheidippides, the messenger took 2500 years ago. As per legend, he ran 42.12 km to deliver the news of the victory of Athens in the battle of Marathon.
You can give your tribute to Pheidippides by participating in this marathon. The course goes downhill in some parts and uphill in other parts. The runners finish the race in the historical Panathenaic stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games.

#3 Sparkasse Marathon, Germany – The Multiple Country Marathon
Why – Do you wish to travel to a lot of countries? Then you should consider the Sparkasse marathon. When you compete in this one, you would have visited three countries! The course traverses through, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It starts in Lindau, Germany. It then passes through towns in Austria and Switzerland and finishes in Bregenz, Austria.
While you are running you are treated to picturesque views of Lake Constance, Bodensee and snow-capped mountains. The course is pretty flat and the weather is perfect for a run.

#4 The Great Wall of China Run – One of the Toughest Marathons
Why – The Great Wall of China is a historical monument and a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the marathon course takes you across the Great Wall and more than 5,100 steps.
Along the way you pass through uphill and downhill routes, quaint villages, scenic farmlands and valleys. It is a gruelling race as the height of the steps can range from few inches to knee height. It tests your fitness levels to the maximum and you will be rewarded with utmost satisfaction when you finish it.

#5 Bhutan International Marathon – The Mysterious, Spiritual marathon
Why – Bhutan is a beautiful Himalayan country that places more importance on Gross National Happiness than economic indicators. The marathon is a good chance to visit this picturesque country that promises to offer a lot to adventure enthusiasts and spiritual seekers. The course is on a high altitude which makes it tough.
The full marathon starts at an elevation of about 6700 feet and the route traverses through hard dirt roads and pavements. The finish line is aptly at the historic Punakha Dzong, the palace of great happiness or bliss.
