What's the story?
It is a fine time to be a successful Indian sportsperson in today's day and age as many of them are getting their own biopics. 2008 Olympics gold medalist Abhinav Bindra will be the next in line to get his own movie after the likes of MS Dhoni, Milkha Singh, Mary Kom and Sachin Tendulkar.
Actor Harshvardhan Kapoor, son of Anil Kapoor, confirmed yesterday that he will be playing the lead role. He posted a picture on social media with the shooting legend, stating that he hoped to do justice to the role.
In case you didn't know
Kapoor made his Bollywood debut in Rakeysh Mehra's Mirzyaa in 2016 and is looking forward to the release of his next project 'Bhavesh Joshi', directed by Vikramaditya Motwane. Harshvardhan announced his involvement in the Bindra biopic with a tweet.
Bindra had bagged India's first gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and managed to finish 4th in Rio 2016. After the Rio Olympics, he announced his retirement from shooting.
The heart of the matter
Harshvardhan even took to Instagram to spread the word and said that he was "stoked" to have been chosen to portray a man who has done the nation proud on an international stage.
Reports of Kapoor playing India's first gold medallist first surfaced in December 2016 but Anil Kapoor and Harshvardhan remained coy on the intricacies of the deal. Anil said that it was too early to talk about it but once everything was finalized then he would talk about it.
What's next?
Kapoor now awaits the release of his movie 'Bhavesh Joshi' directed by Vikramaditya Motwane which is scheduled to release this year. He celebrated the occasion with an Instagram post with the director.
Author's take
With a flurry of biopics, a number of athletes from Mahendra Singh Dhoni to Mary Kom has been represented on the big screen. It would be a wonderful tribute to India's first gold medallist Abhinav Bindra.
