Adam Vella seizes Shooting World Cup trap gold

Adam Vella of Australia who is of Maltese origin won the Shooting World Cup trap gold in Beijing. The 38 year old Vella who won an Olympic Bronze medal at the 2004 Olympics held in Athens scored 143 hits to reach at the top ahead of the three Olympic gold medalists playing in the tournament on Sunday. His opponent Alex Alipov of Russia who has won the Olympic Gold medal in 2004 lost to Vella by four points.

The champion Vella entered in the final round with 121 qualification rounds. Before the final round, it was Nasser Meqlad of Kuwait with Vella who have taken lead in the tournament. However, Vella lost concentration in the final round when numerous” no birds” occurred. Despite this, Vella regained his focus in the match to shoot 22 clays out of 25 adding his total to 143 hits securing the top spot.

Alex Alipov who had also won an Olympic Bronze medal in 2008 Olympics notched the second spot by scoring a total of 139 hits(120 +19). Ryan Hayden of US finished at third place missing the second slot by a narrow margin. He won the bronze medal by making a total of 138 hits(118+20).

The 1996 and 2000 Olympic winner Michael Diamond, aged 37 beat the 2008 Olympic Champion David Kostelecky of Czech Republic to win the fourth place.

Diamond is currently at the No. 1 position in the World Ranking.
