An assessment of India's Olympic ambitions at the ASC event

In 2008 Summer Olympics, nine shooters from India took part in various shooting events. For the 2012 London Olympics India has secured nine quota places so far and with 20 more places up for grabs, India can send a large shooting contingent to the Olympics than the last time.

However, in each event, one country can win up to two quota’s. The quota belongs to the country and not to the shooter who has won it, so the country can choose a shooter to represent them at a event.

With brilliant shooters like Omkar, Rathore, Shweta and other remarkable marksmen/women participating in the Asian shooters confederation, India has a great chance of winning at least 4-6 quota places.

Shooters who have already won a quota in a particular event cannot win another quota in a different event, but can represent India in other events of the same category (rifle/pistol/shotgun) if India doesn’t have two qualified shooters for that event.

e.g. Gagan Narang has won a quota in 10m Air Rifle and Sanjeev Rajput in 50m Rifle 3P. If India does not win one more quota in 50m Rifle 3P, then Gagan Narang can take part in 50m 3P at the London Olympics as well. How ever Sanjeev Rajput can’t take part in 10m Air Rifle as Abhinav Bindra has already secured the second quota place in the 10m AR event

Assessment of India's chances of grabbing Olympic Quota at the ASC

Based on the assessment, India has a chance of winning at least 4-6 quota places for the 2012 London Olympics.
