Incheon, Sep 20 (IANS) Indian shooter Jitu Rai Saturday clinched a gold medal in the men's 50 metre pistol event in the Asian Games at the Ongnyeon International Shooting Range here.
After first series, Rai was in fourth place with 28.7 points. He was shooting well and did not drop down as the Chinese and Vietnamese shooters looked to surge ahead. By the end of eighth series, Rai was just 0.7 points behind leader Vietnam's Nguyen. It came down to the last series and the Indian edged ahead of the Vietnamese by 0.2 points with one shot left.
Nguyen shot 5.8 and Jitu was calm and shot 8.4 to clinch India’s first gold medal at this year’s Asian Games. The silver medal went to Nguyen and China's Wei Pang took home the bronze. Rai finished with a score of 186.2 points ahead of Nguyen’s 183.4.
Earlier, Shweta Chaudhry had given India its first medal at the event.
