India could not have asked for a better start on the first day of the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final 2024. The final in Delhi on Tuesday (October 15) started on a brilliant note for the hosts.
India's Sonam Maskar brought the nation a silver in the women's 10m air rifle event. The 22-year-old showed great skill and composure as she recorded a total score of 252.9 to snatch a podium finish. Though she started off the all-important final lagging behind after the first series, Sonam roared back to get into the lead.
The entire arena was behind the Indian as she held on to her second position right till the end. Maskar did not let go of the momentum as she eventually finished with the silver medal. China's Huang Yuting clinched gold with a new world record of 254.5 while France’s Oceanne Muller took the bronze.
The other Indian in the final Tilttoma Sen finished in the sixth position.
Paris Olympians Arjun Babuta and Arjun Singh Cheema falter in the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final 2024
There were a lot of expectations riding on the duo of Arjun Babuta and Arjun Singh Cheema. However, they both failed to impress at the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final 2024. Arjun was first up in the Men's 10m Air Rifle final. The other Indian shooter with him in the event was Divyansh Panwar.
Arjun started off brilliantly and was leading in the first position after his first few shots but it all went downhill for him from there. In the end, Babuta could manage a score of 188.3 to finish 5th. Divyansh ended in the eighth position with 124.0.
Arjun Singh Cheema was up next in the Men's 10m Air Pistol final. Cheema would have been really disappointed as he never got going. His loss was a heavy one as he finished in the last position.
The other Indians who competed on the day were Rhythm Sangwan and Surbhi Rao in the Women's 10m Air Pistol. Rhythm came ever so close to the podium as she finished in the fourth position with 197.2. Surbhi was impressive on her debut at the ISSF Shooting World Cup Final, finishing fifth with 176.6.
