New Delhi, July 1 (IANS): A historic gold medal in the recent World Cup has catapulted pistol shooter Jitu Rai to the No. 1 spot in 10m air pistol event in the latest ISSF rankings released Tuesday.
Rai is the seventh Indian shooter to be ranked No.1 in the world. Anjali Bhagwat, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Gagan Narang, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Ronjon Sodhi and Heena Sidhu have been No. 1 in the past.
Rai followed up his silver with a historic gold in the men's air pistol event during the ISSF World Cup in Maribor, Slovenia, last month.
It was the first time an Indian shooter has won two medals in a World Cup championship.
Rai, who missed the free pistol gold by 0.1 point and had to settle for silver, shot 200.8 in the final round of the air pistol event to clinch the gold medal.
The gold was his third medal in back-to-back World Cups. He had won the air pistol silver in the last World Cup in Munich.
