Whenever Winter Olympics is discussed in India, Shiva Keshavan is the first name that comes up. Naturally, Keshavan's participation in the Winter Olympics for the last time has taken the limelight away from Jagdish Singh, the other Indian participant at the Games in PyeongChang.
Jagdish, who hails from a small town named Chamoli which is situated in Uttarakhand, is a cross-country skier who will be competing in his first ever Winter Olympics event on Friday. He joined the Garhwal regiment of the army at a tender age of 17 to supplement his family income. In 2017, he was introduced to the sport when he joined the High Altitude Warfare School in Gulmarg. Since then, he has been fascinated by the sport.
The 26-year-old qualified for the Olympics by a whisker as he finished just one point over the qualification mark in an event held in Finland in 2017. Normally, it would have been a cake-walk from the qualification to taking part in the Olympics but Jagdish had to face many hardships because of administration mistakes.
The skier didn't have a coach two weeks before the start of the Olympics and had to miss the plane to South Korea due to the same reason. The Winter Games Federation of India and the Indian Army suggested coaches to Indian Olympic Association from their end but the IOA doesn't recognize WGFI and hence their suggestion wasn't taken into account. In the end, Subedar Nadeem Iqbal, who took part in the 2014 Winter Olympics, accompanied him to South Korea as his coach.
Now, Jagdish will be taking part in the 15km cross-country skiing event on Friday. Here is how you can catch the event live.
