With Barcelona announcing the appointment of Luis Enrique as their new manager, a lot was set into motion. Luis Enrique is highly revered by the Catalans and wastheir former player and B-team coach (successful at both). Apart from that, his managerial stints also include Celta Vigo and Roma, at both of which he held the position for a year. His time at Roma is largely regarded as a failure, but he found moderate success with Celta Vigo in La Liga. With his appointment dawns a certain "new age" for La Blaugrana. Puyol has confirmed that he will retire after the current season, Pinto's contract won't be renewed and Valdes going to Monaco on a Bosman might turn out to be the worst kept secret of the past decade. Also, Xavi isn't getting any younger and will have at most a year or two of proper first team football in his tank! So the upcoming summer transfer window is absolutely vital for FC Barcelona's future.Let us lookata possible perfect summer transfer window for some of the current Barcelona players who might not find a place in the squad:
#1 Alex Song
The defensive midfielder has not managed to cement his spot in in the team during his time with the club. It is largely due to the brilliance of Busquets and to be fair to Song, he isn't too bad in his position either. He just isn't extraordinary, simply put!
With Barça planning on buying two centre backs (more on that later) and Pique & Bartra already present, Enrique might fancy moving Mascherano to his natural defensive midfield position. That will make Song surplus to requirements and they can afford to sell him
Expected fee: €5-8 million
Likely club: Mid-table EPL teams
Likelihood meter: 7.5/10
Opinion: His transfer to Barça from Arsenal made little sense and if he won't get game time, it's better to cash in on him while Barça still can!
#2 Pedro Rodriguez
Pedro isn't your typical winger. He has a high defensive workrate and is a adept passer of the ball (a trait he learnt, no doubt, courtesy Barça's obsession with tiki-taka). He might not be the blistering, dazzling winger that Barça have in Neymar or Alexis, but he goes about with his job quietly and rather well.
His clever runs draw away the opposition players so that his team mates can display their skill. Despite having a very good early start to the season courtesy Messi's absence (he notched a total of 16 goals and 9 assists in a total of 52 appearances), his form has faded since then.
And if rumours are to be believed, Barcelona management is ready put him on the transfer market.
Expected fee: €25-28 million
Likely club: Manchester United
Likelihood meter: 5/10
Opinion: Pedro (as specified earlier) isn't a typical winger. This's just another way of saying he is moulded into the Barcelona style-of-play. It might be unwise for the management to sell such an integral, but underrated member of the squad!
#3 Cristian Tello
Tello, on the other hand, is your typical winger. He is pacy, wily and an adept crosser and shooter. He has played as a sub for Barça throughout the season and with the current situation of overloaded Blaugrana wings, it's highly likely he'll be a sub next season too.
Brendan Rodgers had expressed his interest in the winger for a loan in the past transfer window, but sadly, that didn't come to fruition.
Given that, it's likely that Tello will receive some offers from Liverpool as well as some other English clubs this summer. In 2014, in 29 appeances in Copa del Rey, La Liga and Champions League, he has a total of 5 goals and 4 assists.
Expected Fee: €8-10 million
Likely Club: Liverpool
Likelihood meter: 8/10
Opinion: If Barcelona does plan on spending big this window, they need to offload some players too, and Tello seems like the only young player who could generate adequate interest and a modest transfer fee. They should sell him (loaning him would seem like a better option to allow him to grow as a player)
#4 Jonathan dos Santos, Ibrahim Afellay, Isaac Cuenca, Bojan Krkic
These four have never really impressed at Barca and given their current form and how low they are in the pecking order, it's unlikely they'll even get a chance to do so in the near future. Granted dos Santos only recently joined training after a major surgery, but he wasn't exactly setting the field on fire prior to that either.
Afellay and Cuenca are both efficient wingers who'll thrive in mid table EPL, La Liga or Serie A teams. The case of Bojan Krkic is the strangest: hailed as the new Messi, the brightest talent to graduate from the famed La Masia academy since the four time Ballon d'Or winner, he showed some spark initially that justified the rumour and hype.
But a couple of failed loans and injuries and he now falls in the category of child prodigies who faded away(he is still very young though, at 23 years old)
Expected combined fee: €9-10 million max
Likely club: Mid-table EPL or La Liga team or even Eredivisie teams
Likelihood meter: 8.5/10
Opinion: These young players showed a lot of promise early on only to fade away. And now it's time to sell them to free space from the squad to promote more promising talents
#5 Alexis Sanchez
The case of Sanchez is quite strange. Till the past season, he was loathed by even the die-hard Culés, due to his lack of goals, assists or quality. Simply put, he looked like a fish out of water at Barcelona. Fast forward to present time, Culés just can't get enough of him.
He has been in blistering form this season, scoring 21 goals (including that brilliant chip in El Clasico) and 13 assists in 52 appearances. He is finally justifying the money Barcelona paid to Udinese. He himself has credited the confidence the coach has put in him as key to his success.
However, with fame comes transfer requests in the footballing world and if rumours are to be believed, Sanchez is part of a swap deal with Juventus that includes Arturo Vidal.
Expected fee: Sanchez + around €5-8 million for Vidal
Likely Destination: Juventus
Likelihood meter: 5/10
Opinion: This is a bit of a dilemma for everybody involved and the issue must be treated very cautiously. Alexis should only be sold if Pedro is still in the Barça ranks. Barcelona can't afford to lose both established wingers. The price tag is also a bit of a strange one.
Vidal ideally should be worth €35-40 million and given current form, so should Sanchez. However, Juventus turned down a €50 million bid for Vidal last time around. Vidal isn't a top priority for Barça but keeping one of their top players in red-hot form is. However, Barcelona has long lacked a strong box to box central midfielder, so that might be tempting!
#6 Dani Alves
Alves, at 31, is past his prime and given his playing style of bombarding forward with blistering pace and skill, that might be an issue for him now. His tendency of being a free talker (openly criticising fans for their "lack of support") hasn't been received too well either by fans. And now, it seems with Valdes possibly joining Monaco, his teammate will follow suit, but as his competitor, to PSG.
Although no formal enquiries or bids have yet been made, rumours are going around that Dani Alves is unhappy at Barca, and wants a move away, for what possibly might be the last big contract of his illustrious career!
Barcelona need to think long and hard about this one: there aren’t any established, good right backss of Dani Alves's class in the market, so they will have to stick to young guns like di Sciglio (or even Juan Cuadrado, who plays as a right midfielder for Serie A side Fiorentina).
That might hamper the progress of Martin Montoya who showed some real promise last season
Expected fee: €12-15 million
Likely destination: PSG
Likelihood meter: 6.5/10
Opinion: People often overlook the contribution of Dani Alves in the Guardiola Dream Team that won everything in its path. That isn't right at all. Since joining from Sevilla in 2008, Alves has etched himself into the record books for Barcelona and is a Barça legend in his own right.
That being said, with no disrespect intended towards him, he is fading and if he wants one more large contract before going out with a bang, Barcelona should consider selling him if they can't meet his demands
#7 Cesc Fabregas
This seems to be the elephant in the room! Will he or won't he? Fabregas' love for Barcelona has been well-documented as has been his "hate" for Manchester United during his time at Arsenal. He was hailed as the successor to Xavi (the "next Xavi") when Barca bought him from Arsenal in August 2011. It was the emotional homecoming as was expected.
Atypically for Fabregas, he hasn't lived up to his moniker. And rather than blaming Fabregas, a lot of it has to fall on the managers who have forced him to play as a winger or a false 9! Fabregas isn't a fast enough player to be a winger, nor is his dribbling or shooting at par for him to be a centre forward (for Barça or for Spain).
As a result, his form and mentality have taken a hit. United tried to sign Fabregas quite a few times last summer but were rejected each time. But now, if rumours are to be believed, Barça has put a €45 million price tag on him.
And all that rumour doesn't mean Fabregas had a bad season either. Despite the dip in form late on, he has managed to score 12 goals and provide 16 assists in 53 appearances this season in all competitions for Barcelona!
Expected price: €45 million
Likely destination: Arsenal or Manchester United
Likelihood meter: 5/10
Opinion: No one can be Xavi, he is once in a lifetime sort of player! So, to expect Fabregas to imitate him is highly unfair to the midfielder.
Whatever opportunities he has been given, he has shone (his stats suggest that he has a blistering run of form till Christmas each season, only to fade away quite unexpectedly after New Year, each time).
That being said, Fabregas is a world class central midfielder and would be an asset to his boyhood club, if deployed correctly
