Someone said this on Twitter, “One of humanity's worst inventions of all time is the international break” and it got me thinking. Is the international break really that bad? Yes, we don’t get to see our beloved clubs play and our weekend is mostly spent doing absolutely nothing. And so, to make getting through this ‘interlul’ easier, I came up with a list of things a football fan could do and actually have a good time.
#10 Read a book
Pick up that footballer’s autobiography you’ve been meaning to and finish it over the weekend. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Dennis Bergkamp, Roy Keane – Take your pick.
#9 Watch a football movie
Not seen Class of ’92 or The Damned United as yet? Perfect time to snuggle with your better half (or dog/cat) and consume possibly the best football movies in a long time.
#8 FIFA 17
Do I even have to mention this? Pick the worst team ever and go make them win the Premier League, the Champions League, etc.Sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and the likes – weekend well spent!
#7 Football Manager, anyone?
Call friends over and go find that old Football Manager you couldn’t do without. Spend time catching up (read: kicking their ass) because guess what? You’re a still a pro!
#6 I am a Keyboard Warrior!
Remember all those Facebook football groups you’ve barely participated in because “those kids” don’t know what they’re talking about?
Go dig up those threads and share your ‘expansive’ knowledge about the game.
#5 Build/Change your Fantasy Team
Still haven’t gotten around to building your Fantasy Team? Do it now! The rest of you can work out strategies, check out friends’ teams and make changes to your team. Use that wildcard, if you haven’t already! Injuries are galore in the PL, and right now would be the perfect time to set up an almost-new team.
#4 Watch old football videos
Getting all nostalgic thanks to the alcohol in your system? Instead of drunk dialing your ex, log on to YouTube and play videos about the finest players your club had, the time you won that trophy (PS: Arsenal fans, watch the Invincibles season. Again.)
However, try not to cry watching the players who left your club and are now playing for a rival.
#3 Go watch your local team, LIVE!
If none of the above interest you, and there’s local football action happening over the weekend, go for it! This is probably the only time you’ll actually end up attending one of those games.
Pretend you’re a scout; it just doubles the fun!
#2 Apply for a football job
HasAitorKarankaBeenSackedYet? Think you can take his place? Or at Watford maybe?
Draw up that impressive CV; don’t forget to include all your FIFA and Football Manager accomplishments. Get references from friends and others for when you left them lying on the ground curled up in a ball after a 12-0 defeat.
#1 Actually watch some International Football
This had to be coming! There’s football on TV, and yes, it’s not club football, but it’s football never-the-less. And you know you will end up watching a game or two, or at least one-half of watching England making a fool of themselves in front of San Marino.
If nothing at all, keep an eye on your players and see if any of them get injured. Go bite off Gareth Southgate’s head on Twitter then!
