The year 2014 was full of major football events, with the FIFA World Cup a great amalgamation of nationalities, cultures and personalities. What we also saw was players exhibit a lot of creativity in terms of their look on the field, specifically their hair. Here we look at some of the weirdest hairstyles seen in 2014:
#1 Mario Balotelli
For the World Cup, Maverick Mario went with his tried and tested mohawk, much to the disappointment of his fans. On the grandest stage in world football, it was expected of Balotelli to come up with something crazy, but for once the Italian resisted the urge.
More recently though, Balotelli sported a yellow-coloured mohawk days before the Merseyside derby. Rumour has it that it was a tribute to the derby from the man himself.
#2 Marco Reus
The young Germany and Borussia Dortmund star has quite the fan following when it comes to hairstyles. Why, even a quick google search throws up tutorial videos titled “How to get the Marco Reus hairstyle”.
This is the style in question, and indeed in vogue. Explains why Reus has such a serious fan following!
#3 Neymar
Neymar’s dishevelled, blonde hairdo was seen at the World Cup in Brazil, with the Barcelona forward making the most of the eyeballs on him during the tournament. Tipped by many to star in the World Cup, Neymar and his hairdo were at the centre of everything good (however little) that Brazil did in the torunament.
The blonde looks have gone though for Barcelona. It’s back to a more classical, and more acceptable haircut for Neymar now.
#4 Toby Alderweireld
The Belgian fullback gained quite a following for his haricut at the World Cup, a very Marco Reus-ish style that appealed to the fans. Fans of the EPL should keep an eye out on the Southampton player, for he is sure to surprise this season.
#5 Luka Modric
For the first few minutes of Croatia’s first World Cup game, it was quite a challenge spotting Modric in the game. The Croatian discarded his usual blonde bangs and instead sported a more tradtitional look for the Brazil tournament.
#6 Vorsah Isaac
They call it the Sisqo. Vorsah Isaac of Ghana is the guilty party here. The Ghanaian international sported this look for much of the year.
#7 Kyle Beckerrman
MLS star and United States international Kyle Beckerman has sported a look consisting of dreadlocks that is more commonly assoicated with hippies – at least that’s what the internet tells me. And there are no lies on the internet, right?
#8 Raul Meireles
The former Liverpool midfielder and current Portugal international was one of the picks of the World Cup. No, not in terms of performance but how easy it was to pick him out in a crowd, thanks to his uber-cool mohawk and beard combination look.
#9 Nani
For the World Cup, Nani had the number “17” drawn into his hair. Just in case you couldn’t read his shirt number.
#10 Paul Pogba
The midfielder became a household name this year due to his exploits with Juventus and the French national team. His peculiar front-dyed mohawk may have also contributed to his fame.
#11 Arturo Vidal
Another Juve player on the list, and it’s the Chilean international Arturo Vidal. The midfielder’s famous mohawk and cuts have made him a cult figure amongst fans, and his frequent experiments are quite the talking point amongst his followers.
#12 Danijel Pranjic
Following closely on the heels of Arturo Vidal is Croatian international Danijel Pranjic, who sported a much fuller mohawk during the World Cup.
#13 Dani Alves
Taking a cue from Neymar, Dani Alves too dyed his hair blonde for the World Cup in Brazil. But it made him look really old, to be honest.
More recently though, the Brazilian has been sporting a much younger, dye-free look.
#14 Stephan El Shaarawy
Ah yes, Stephan El Shaarawy. The posterboy of weird football hairstyles. No list would be complete without him and his odd mohawk look.
