Not every gimmick is destined for greatness. Some need time to develop and some are just plain disasters to begin with. WWE has far fetched characters. They can be ridiculous but it's all part of the package that is the World Wrestling Entertainment. Some may call it ridiculous, but fans may call them larger than life. So, it's not entirely shocking to realize that some superstars who have attained a strong foothold in the industry were quite tepid characters to begin with. The opportunity for a complete reinvention wasn't lost on these superstars and something clicked with their second chance. Here are the 5 best reinventions of WWE superstars over the years.
#5 Husky Harris To Bray Wyatt
Bray Wyatt was there when NXT was in its second season of being a reality-competition based TV show. It was only that we knew him as Husky Harris.
He was one of the newest additions of The Nexus. He was there when Barrett was the leader of that group and also when CM Punk took over. But when the group fizzled out, so did his main roster status. He received a punt kick from Orton which put him out of the main roster. That meant returning to FCW and debuting a new character later down the road.
That new character sort of in its own way made NXT seem legit and changed the way NXT is looked at. This was some great kayfabe in itself. He formed The Wyatt Family while he was nursing an injury.
That cult leader role solidified his position as one of the most promising characters on WWE television.
He’s still losing big matches despite great build ups, but all of this doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s become a compelling character and one of the best promo workers of the company.
#4 Nicky to Dolph Ziggler
Dolph Ziggler’s career has been quite the roller coaster. He’s been a cheerleader, a lackey and has been and still is The Showoff. In this capacity, he’s been a ‘#Heel’ and he’s currently playing the role of being a great babyface.
Not that he was bad in the role of being a sidekick, but he never gained the traction that could lead to big things in the future. He’s a great athlete and that worked towards getting a singles career.
From being a cheerleader to becoming the most well-known and best seller of moves in the WWE; it had been quite a journey where the fans just wanted him to catch a break. The Showoff gimmick has already given him two World Title reigns. The second win being his best and most memorable till date.
He truly stole the show.
#3 Hunter Hearst Helmsley to Triple H
Dolph Ziggler and Triple H share the same birthday and the one thing they have in common is what this article is about – reinvention.
Triple H started off with a gimmick that was a full form of his now famous name. He appeared to be quite the bourgeois, etiquette following type of a character with a very aristocratic look full of a tailor coat suit and slicked back hair.
But slowly and steadily he began dropping this snobby gimmick when Chyna became his bodyguard and he formed a partnership with Shawn Michaels. This partnership with HBK and Chyna is now known as the original DX.
That led to him – thankfully – going to a shortened version of his name, settling for the abbreviation HHH. That has made all the difference.
#2 Rocky Maivia to The Rock
This is a fact too well known now that he's a megastar. Dwayne Johnson's advent into the wrestling world began with a character named after his grandfather and father.
He was a textbook babyface and was the sole survivor at Survivor Series 1996. Despite being advertised as a third generation superstar and his family history made quite clear, he wasn't such a hit with the audience. They even began chanting 'Die Rocky Die' at him.
#1 Kane
Kayfabe is not dead yet. With characters like Bray Wyatt – larger than life, supernatural and fictional characters still have a chance.
