Before we begin listing down the names of performers who wrestle in non-traditional attire, let us first know what a customary wrestling gear looks like. It’s quite simple and minimal. It’s wrestling boots, knee pads, tights, singlets etcetera. Sure, there have been many who’ve experimented with the color, the illustrations on their trunks and tights but few have actually let go of the followed structure of these outfits. The current scenario in wrestling does have a few wrestlers who’ve let go of some of the conventional, more regularly worn in- ring gear. Some of them are currently in a mini to micro feud with each other. Here are the 5 prominent names who wrestle in the WWE in non-traditional attire.
#1 John Cena
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
Let’s start with the most prominent, the biggest name on this list precisely because Cena is the face that runs the place. The guy debuted in the most traditional outfit there is in a moment that very well set the Ruthless Aggression Era officially in motion. But Cena became more of a cool, intriguing character when he became a chain gang leader- a rapper.
He started wearing shorts and sneakers. A lot has changed since then. He’s given up the mean streak to fall into place with the PG sensibilities of the company. But the ring gear has stayed intact. And he’s done it for so long that nobody can really replicate it.
#2 Kevin Owens
Kevin Owens wears shorts as well. But he’s no Cena replica. He wears basketball shorts. It’s something that CM Punk used to wear during his indy career but never followed it up in the WWE.
Owens, though, carried it forward to NXT and now the main roster. And now it is his look. Black T-Shirt, black shorts and black boots. It’s all pretty simple. This all black avatar does not really make the shorts stand out but nobody at this moment in the main roster really wrestles with basketball shorts on. There may be new additions to it like having the word ‘fight’ imprinted on those shorts, or going from all black to a little bit black and white.
#3 Rusev
Rusev is another guy who had to shift to traditional gear from something non-traditional. Rusev, since he first showed up in the main roster, is known for being overtly patriotic, quite agile for his strong build, stiff offense and the fact that he chose not to wear boots.
Not wearing boots, wrestling barefoot instantly made him stand out. It represented a raw side of wrestling. And somehow all his kicks looked all the more effective and painful.
But a knee injury changed all of that. He has to wear boots now and that’s the company’s preventive measure from any future injuries.
#4 Cesaro
Now, we move on to the guy who never has had a bad match with John Cena. Actually, this performer is one of the best wrestlers around who boasts of some tremendous, unmatched strength and array of skills in the ring.
Cesaro, at a glance, wears trunks and wrestling boots but for a while didn’t wear knee pads. He rather chose to wear thigh bands. How common is that?
Though, that stood out, Cesaro has now started wearing knee pads. You don’t see them thigh bands anymore. It could have become his trademark and for some of his fans, they are. Paul Heyman even once tweeted that somebody should sponsor the thigh bands.
#5 Goldust/Stardust
We’ve seen colorful characters in the WWE with even more colorful outfits. But how many are known to wear full-on body suits?
The appeal of Goldust as one of the most controversial characters on the roster was because of his mannerisms and that body hugging suit that he wore around and wrestled in. During his earlier days in this characters, the outfits were even more suggestive.
Right now, Stardust wears a body suit as well, but he is playing more of a comic book gimmick. And that’s fitting, forgive the pun, since so many comic book heroes and villains are known to have such body embracing outfits.
