Louis van Gaal's men are currently third in the table and a top 4 finish is well within their sights. Though it has been far from a perfect season for the Red Devils, Van Gaal has restored the faith at Old Trafford and the confidence of every player is slowly but surely coming back. Many former United players have already predicted that the team can very well win the League next season. The Old Trafford outfit have made some considerable improvements and they would surely start as one of the favourites to win the 2015-16 Premier League title. Here are five genuine reasons why Manchester United can win the Premier league next season and thus clinch their 21st title:
#1 Van Gaal has finally found the correct formation
From day one of this season, every Manchester United fan has been wondering what Louis van Gaal’s philosophy is all about. He tried almost every system this season, from a 4-4-2 to the infamous 3-5-2, and a 4-2-3-1 all have been tried at various points of the season and all were ineffective. But he finally found the right system when he went back to the 4-3-3 he used at Ajax and Barcelona.
The new formation has worked really well and the players look comfortable in the system. United’s playing has improved significantly in the past two months. Moreover, the best part is the philosophy is still in works and the best is yet to come.
The other great thing is this formation has brought back Rooney to the frontline and he is now spearheading Manchester United’s strike force. With all the players now understanding their roles, it will be interesting to see how they perform next season.
#2 JuAnder effect: The Mata-Herrera combination working
It has been no doubt that Manchester United have lacked a proper midfielder to support since Paul Scholes’ retirement. If the last 3 months are any indication, then Manchester United may very well have found the solution to their midfield problem in Ander Herrera. Not only is Herrera adjusting well to the Premier League, his Spanish compatriot Juan Mata has also rediscovered his old touch.
Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have worked very well in midfield and have scored 16 goals combined this season. Mata has been bright and busy and showed he is enjoying his football again whereas Herrera is dominating the midfield with his tireless running and positional play.
The two Spaniards not only gel well on the field but share a very close friendship even off the field. "I think it’s because of the relationship we’ve had over the years and because we understand football and life in more or less the same way," Mata told MUTV, when asked about their success earlier this month.
Many are comparing this duo to Xavi-Iniesta and by looking at how these two have linked on the field, it is sure to say there is something special developing and that can only mean good for Manchester United in the coming seasons.
#3 Great results against the top teams
One of the highs for Manchester United this season has been their results against the top 6 teams in the league. Manchester United did a double over their fierce rivals Liverpool, they beat Arsenal at the Emirates, defeated their Manchester rivals recently at Old Trafford and secured 4 points out of 6 against Tottenham.
The only two games they lost were against Manchester City at Etihad and against Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge.
Though, Manchester United lost to the leaders Chelsea, the performance given by the Van Gaal’s players was worth appreciating and clearly shows United have come a long way from where they were at the start of the season.
These results against their close rivals can only serve as a huge boost for the next season. In addition, it shows the winning mentality has returned after last season’s debacle. Had United not dropped points against the likes of Swansea, Burnley, Sunderland and Leicester, they could very well have been in the title race right now.
#4 Rejuvenated Angel Di Maria could be crucial
One of the big disappointments for Van Gaal and Manchester United supporters this season has been the poor form of their record signing Angel Di Maria. But, it will not be wrong to say that injuries and other off-field issues like an attempted robbery at his house have contributed to his poor form. Next season could be the real test for Angel Di Maria and he would love to prove his doubters wrong.
Manchester United have only seen glimpses of their club record signing at his best, so the idea that there is more to come is a particularly exciting one. The manager has already made the likes of Fellaini and Young, who were considered flops, much better players. So there should be no doubt that Di Maria can also rediscover his old form come next season.
Not only Di Maria but other signings like Luke Shaw, Rojo etc. will all have one season’s experience of playing under Van Gaal, so do not be surprised if all the signings show their best next season.
Though, Di Maria has only managed 3 goals in the league this season, he is second in the league in the assists department, having 10 for the season. Like the famous saying goes “Form is temporary, but Class is permanent”.
#5 Transfer signings to strengthen the squad
Manchester United spent £150 million last summer and bought six new players and there is little doubt that they would do the same this summer. They have been linked to the likes of Mats Hummels, Memphis Depay, Paul Pogba and Real Madrid star Gareth Bale – signings that any side in the world would be delighted with.
It is clear that the Red Devils need some strengthening at the back. A new world-class centre-back, a new right-back and another midfielder could propel them to the top of the division.
Louis van Gaal by now would have figured out what type of players he needs who would fit into his philosophy without any difficulty. It would not be surprising if he has already given his wish list to executive vice-chairman Woodward and Woodward would have already started working on that.
