Twins come into this planet sharing a special bond. When they take up sport, the fans are intrigued and often confused as to whom to back when they face off against each other in an individual sport. There is no such problem when they are teammates battling a common cause. We look at 5 twins who have performed exceptionally well on the world stage.
#1 Bob and Mike Bryan
The Bryans have won multiple Olympic medals, including the gold in 2012 and have won more professional games, matches, tournaments and Grand Slams than any other pairing. They have held the World No. 1 doubles ranking jointly for 380 weeks (as of September 8, 2014), which is longer than anyone else in doubles history. Between 2005 and 2006, they set an Open Era record by competing in seven consecutive men's doubles Grand Slam finals.
They recently won the US Open which is their 100th doubles title win.
#2 Mark and Steve Waugh
The most famous twins in cricket are the Waugh brothers. Steve Waugh was one of the most successful captains in the history of the game and held a 16 match winning streak in test cricket.
He led Australia between 1999 and 2004 which included a World Cup win in 1999. Mark was one of the best slip fielders with over 180 catches in test matches.
#3 Rene and Willy van de Kerkhof
Frank and Ronald are probably the best twins to have played the game of football ever. The brothers played at five clubs – Ajax, Barcelona, Rangers, Al-Raygan and Al-shamel. They also won a UEFA Champions League title together in 1995.
#4 Rene and Willy van de Kerkhof
Rene and Willy became the only brothers to have scored in a FIFA World Cup in 1978. In 2004, Pele named them in his list of the top 125 greatest living footballers.
#5 Hossam and Ibrahim Hassan
They are the most-capped brothers in football history. Hossam played 169 games for the Egyptian National team, while Ibrahim appeared on 125 occasions. Both have now moved on to coaching.
