Literally, there is nothing bigger than WrestleMania when it comes to professional wrestling, and over the years, WWE has leached a lot of money from this golden goose. The credit for most of the success of the event goes to the writers and their good buildup. However, this year, we were offered some ridiculous decisions which turned everything upside down. Despite it being the 30th anniversary edition, the hype surrounding WrestleMania is nowhere near its usual magnitude. Now all that the creative could do will be to put up a great show to cover up their screw ups. But before we know whether they cover up or not, lets take a look at the biggest decisions that went wrong on the road to WrestleMania
#5 Usos Title win
Last year, the Tag team division showed great consistency and was filling the holes that the creative had in the mid card of the roster.
Teams like Rhodes Brothers, Rybaxel, Real Americans and Usos were flourishing and were boosted with the New Age Outlaws. Outlaws then went on to win the title at Royal Rumble which was a big surprise to many. But what followed just ended up everything on a downward spiral.
The Usos were hot in the division and was destined to get the title. And instead of giving Usos a big WrestleMania moment WWE made them win the title at Raw. Now Usos will be defending their title against three other teams just weeks after winning the title.
So what are the chances of them losing the title after winning the title just weeks before the match? Very low right? And that’s the program with Tag team titles at the moment.
#4 Shield Face turn
Shield is a group of three wrestlers who got all the ammunition to make it big as singles competitors. There were a lot of tease of the group breaking up and Roman Reigns having a big push.
It didn’t materialize despite the efforts in Survivor Series and Royal Rumble. Shield soon found themselves as a unit without cracks and WWE decided to give them a face turn which rose many eyebrows.
To be frank, the face turn was actually a good idea, but their opponents were the problem. Kane and the New Age Outlaws was no match for the hounds of justice and the feud just killed off the momentum of Shield.
Shield now has a predictable match at WrestleMania which might not give the fans what they want.
#3 Making Undertaker look strong
It’s been almost a decade now since the WWE has been booking Taker at WrestleMania with his streak at a prominence factor. The whole angle was thrown out in a repetitive fashion this year also with Brock Lesnar as the latest challenger.
Lesnar is someone who used to tear apart his opponents and when all of a sudden Taker came in, WWE decided to make him look like a coward. If the writers made Taker look like a physically weak opponent to Lesnar, the streak angle would’ve been more interesting and credible.
Taker instead was projected as an immortal against which Lesnar stood no chance. It added a hell lot of predictability to the match and ruined the much anticipated WrestleMania moment of Taker.
Paul Heyman and his skills would’ve been put to better use with this as well since he will be boasting how dominating his client will be rather than giving threats that has no basis.
#2 Batista winning the Royal Rumble
Batista was a big star during his last run at WWE. And the company made the most logical by booking him big when he returned.
But what they didn’t realize was the WWE Universe no longer saw superstars on the basis of popularity. What they wanted was performance, something which a rusty Batista didn’t deliver.
First of all, WWE left Daniel Bryan out of the Royal Rumble which made the fans angry. To add with it, they made a botch by returning Batista as a face. And to cap it off, they made Batista the Royal Rumble winner.
It reportedly tossed apart every build up to WrestleMania and acted as a catalyst to CM Punk’s exit. Fans no longer were even eager to see the main event. Though WWE made efforts to cover this up by making it a triple threat, it still remains as one of the worst decisions on the road to WrestleMania.
#1 Unifying the title
Okay this one didn’t really happen on the road to WrestleMania but such a big decision was made with the pay-per-view in mind.
It sounded good at the start, but as Orton started his reign WWE started to realize that they made a decision which literally scrapped off their chances to put up a great match at WrestleMania. Having two champions would’ve been more interesting as it added another opportunity for the company to have stakes at any top feud.
Instead they had to throw in the lights of Rey Mysterio, Del Rio, Dolph Ziggler and many more into a makeshift battle royal which was pretty unfair.
Having the other title alive and letting Taker and Lesnar fight it out would’ve been much better than the repetitive Streak angle. Orton failed miserably as a champion and now WWE had to make Bryan wrestle twice to put paper over those cracks.
