The WWE has played all the possible cards they could to make the fans invest in Payback which happens to go down this Sunday. But apparently, apart from the top two bouts, the fans dont seem to be interested in the PPV as a whole.Injury of Daniel Bryan was the first thing which went against the WWE creative while the mid card titles failing to creative enough fuzz proved to the next. But the most frightening thing about Payback for WWE will be the fact that it is going to happen in Chicago. The fans are known to be extra vocal when it comes to criticism and if WWE fail impress them, its going to be a riot to say the least. One way in which WWE could cover up for their shortcomings will be to let some big return happen at the pay-per-view to overshadow whatever happened. So here is a look at the best option that WWE could consider.
#5 Ric Flair
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
It was evident last time that the WWE universe has a highly nostalgic place for Ric Flair in their hearts. And though WWE teased him aligning with the Evolution some time back, the fans didn’t get a chance to see that happen.
The latest rumors suggest that Ric Flair will be returning to manage Miz or Dolph Ziggler. If any of the three scenarios happen at Payback, the fans are surely going to enjoy that.
He was at the corner of his daughter at NXT Takeover and the way the fans reacted to Flair was the biggest sign that he still has it. Ric Flair being on television week in and week out will be a mouthwatering prospect and him locking horns with Paul Heyman will be a much bigger one.
#4 AJ Lee
AJ Lee single handedly carried the divas division in her shoulder and eventually became the longest reigning divas champion as well. She however didn’t stick around much longer after dropping the title which was a disappointment for the fans. From WWE’s perspective, it was a good thing as it gave Paige some time to get her own fan base. Then again, they didn’t allow her to get on the mic as she didn’t have a credible opponent.
All that could change at Payback if AJ returns. The returning AJ will breathe life into the division and Paige who is running out of opponents already.
Paige and AJ are great talkers and if it materializes, WWE could finally have a divas feud that would win over the fans with the promos itself.
#3 Chris Jericho
Jericho always showed up to save the fans from desperate situations and at Payback if he does the same it’s going to be havoc in Chicago.
Even at his age, Jericho is a priced asset for the WWE as he is excellent both in and off the ring. WWE could give him a main event run to compensate for their lack of established stars and have him face some of the upcoming talent in the process.
A feud with Bray Wyatt certainly seems to be the most exciting prospect as both men have mastered the talent of cutting promos.
And since Jericho made his debut in Chicago there won’t be a better place for him to make a return as well making this the perfect situation.
#2 Vince McMahon
Vince McMahon has been out of television for a ridiculously long time now and he witnessed he pockets getting drained during the same.
It would only be a matter of time before McMahon decides to react and the best way he could do that is to return to the roster and establish himself as an authority figure.
He could easily strike up a feud with Hunter and Stephanie based on their inefficient running of the company as well. With baby faces, like Shield and Daniel Bryan already having some friction with the Authority, Vince could find some firepower at ease.
This could turn out to be a feud that can run through the whole summer and give the fans something to cheer about.
#1 CM Punk
Punk is the obvious list topper here as his return would not only make Payback a success, it could even make the pay-per-view one of the most important one so far.
Ever since Punk walked off, there have been rumors of him making a return. They became stronger than ever as we edges towards Payback, but Punk recently shot down the same saying that he is retired.
We’ve seen many wrestler rant about being retired and make big returns and Punk doing the same would clearly be a great thing for the company. They will benefit a lot from the big surprise and having Punk in the roster is always a great thing to raise the stocks.
Even if he doesn’t come back to be active, Punk could even make an appearance to saw how he walked off which would be equally effective.
