Australia continued their dominance going on the second day of the 1st Test at the Gabba, having reduced their neighbours to 157/5 at stumps. New Zealand had another forgettable day on the field as they endured a mini-batting collapse initiated by the pace duo of Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson, trailing by a daunting 399 runs.Australia declared their innings at 556/4, with all of their batsmen coming good. In reply, New Zealand were ambling along at one stage, but a Mitchell-rampage saw them end the day at a perilous stage. Here are the best frames to have been captured in the course of the match:
#1 Australia\'s new No.3 strikes gold
Usman Khawaja walks in to bat for Australia on Day 2. The 28-year-old, playing in his 10th Test, laid worthy claim to being David Warner’s opening partner for the immediate future
After being dropped during the 2013 Ashes, Khawaja showed he is willing to make most of the new opportunity – the retirement of Michael Clarke. Playing his first Test since being dropped, Khawaja registered the highest score among the Australian batsmen – 174 off 239 balls.
#2 No Boult out of blue
Trent Boult appeals unsuccessfully against Usman Khawaja. It was a day of fruitless labour for the Kiwi bowlers, all of whom went for runs. Even Boult looked largely incapable of troubling the batsmen.
He bowled Steven Smith out for 48, but Adam Voges came in at No. 5 to carry on the good work for the Aussies.
#3 Smith sends Khawaja back
Steve Smith refuses a single, sending Khawaja back. Smith batted with Khawaja for a 88-run partnership, consolidating the start given by the openers and building an imposing lead.
#4 Southee\'s injury
Tim Southee had to leave the field on Day 2 with a back injury, and it is being feared he could be out for the rest of the series too. He picked up 1 wicket in the innings, and was the most economical bowler.
#5 Australia\'s highest scorer, Khawaja\'s highest score
Even as Steven Smith departed, Khawaja went from strength to strength in his knock bringing up his first 150+ score in Test cricket.
Khawaja batted with Steve Smith and Adam Voges to effectively take the Kiwi bowlers out of the game. His previous highest was 65.
#6 Watermelon hat
We are set for an excellent summer of cricket in Australia, and the crowds have turned up in appropriate ways.
#7 The new boss of the team
Steve Smith, leading out his boys in his first series at home as full-time Australia captain. How Smith leads his team in this Test series against New Zealand might go on to be remembered as a make-or-break stint for him.
#8 McCullum\'s body blow
New Zealand were well on course to finish Day 2 on a high at 100/1, but suddenly found themselves under siege from Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson. Tom Latham fell to Starc, Ross Taylor followed, gone for a duck off Mitchell Johnson’s bowling.
Suddenly, the Kiwis were more than happy to block off balls with their bodies. McCullum went soon too, nicking Mitchell Johnson to a catch in the slips.
#9 Neesham\'s castle broken
New Zealand lost 4 of their wickets in the space of 16 runs, reduced to 118/5. Starc and Johnson were proving to be unplayable in the tea session, and none of the Kiwi batsmen had any reply.
#10 Kane guards one end
Kane Williamson was building a patient partnership with Tom Latham before a slide at the other end left his team in deep trouble at stumps on Day 2. Even as the Australian pacers ran through the rest of the batting order, Williamson guarded his end resolutely – living to fight another day.
When Day 3 begins, Williamson will take the field with BJ Watling by his side – Williamson on 55*, Watling on 14* – trailing the Aussie score by 399 runs.
