Here, we will take a look at some crazy football accidents. Football is a game where anything can happen one can become a hero or a villain within seconds. But whatever one does, he/she always runs the risk of getting injured at any point of time. Some get injured during open playwhereas some get injured in absolutely ridiculous circumstances. Pushes, shoves and rough tackles are just some of the primary ways of showing aggression on a football field but have you heard of anybody get injured by a flying advertisement board? Horrendous right? Well, take a look at some of these crazy accidents in the sport:
#10 Bolt From The Sky
Jonathan Richter, a FC Nordsjaelland player, got severely injured after being hit by lightning during a match against FC Hvidore in Copenhagen in 2009. He went into a coma in the hospital but recovered soon enough. Sadly, due to his injuries, he had to have a part of his leg amputated.
#9 The Lord of the Ring.NOT!
Paulo Diogo, playing for Serviette in the Swiss League, as he got injured while celebrating a goal. As he jumped to the crowd to celebrate, he caught the top of his ring on the fence and tore off a part of the finger. To add salt to the wound (literally!), he was booked for celebrating excessively. He certainly isn’t The Lord of The Ring.
#8 An Egg For Your Thoughts
Have you heard of a player getting severely injured by a microwave accident? Well, Kirk Broadfoot is an answer to this question as he was treated to facial burns after an explosion in his microwave, while cooking poached egg!
#7 The Crystal Slap
No, this slap is not something which is embedded into the history books to get such a royal name. In fact, the name isn’t even royal. It signifies the slap that Crystal Palace keeper, Alex Kolinko, had to take from his manager Trevor Francis in October 2002. After laughing at his team conceding a goal, Kolinko was hit around his head, as Francis felt offended. The FA fined Francis 1000 pounds for the incident.
#6 Worst Spray Treatment Ever
And the award for the title above goes to – Manchester City! Why? Well, their talismanic striker, Sergio Aguero, was sidelined for an absolutely stupid injury involving an allergic reaction to a disinfectant spray that the Manchester City medical staff applied on his injured gash – a gash that he got from cutting his foot on his son’s mini-moto bike. His skin inflamed so badly that it was termed as “burn-like blister”. Hats off to the Manchester City staff for “assessing situations”.
#5 Bending The Air
Playing for Sttuttgart Kickers, Sascha Bender, must surely be hoping that he could turn his “smelly air” around to isolated places as he was subjected to a facial injury after suffering a blow from his own teammate, Christian Okpala, who defended himself by saying that “ He permanently provoked me by fa****g all the time.” Well, Bender’s digestive system must have learnt it’s lesson by now.
#4 Perry Gets A CherryOn The Head
Perry Groves was known for his enthusiasm and hard work on the pitch, the former getting the better of the latter when, as an Arsenal player, he celebrated his team’s goal with too much excitement from the bench – injuring his head on the roof of the dug-out! He was immediately treated by team physio Gary Lewin.
#3 Always Heed The Sign
This is something that former Arsenal keeper, Richard Wright, failed to do as he was practising for his subsequent team, Everton, for a FA Cup tie against Chelsea. Ironically, he injured his ankle after falling over a sign which instructed people to not practice there. Well, it was not the right thing to do Mr Wright.
#2 He Believes He Could Fly
Ivano Bonetti surely thinks along the same lines as he was subjected to a “fearful” wrath of his manager when Brian Laws felt that his strong slangs weren’t enough as he threw a plate of chicken wings at Bonetti while debriefing his team after Grimsby’s pathetic 3-2 loss to Luton in February 1996. This resulted in Bonetti getting a fractured cheekbone.
#1 Sorrow for Morrow
Probably the most high-profile accidental injury, the Steve Morrow accident is still frowned upon by the Arsenal faithful. After scoring the winner for Arsenal against Sheffield Wednesday in the League Cup final, Steve Morrow was picked up by Tony Adams, who slipped, and dropped Morrow. Morrow broke his arm and had to be rushed to hospital. The injury prevented him from playing the FA Cup final, but he still got his League Cup Winner’s medal before the FA Cup kicked off. A sad way to honor a match-winning performance.
