The manner in which the first goal was scored hampered Liverpool's resistance and Frank Lampard added the second goal in the second half through a Nicolas Anelka cross. Pepe Reina made some good saves and helped avoid further embarrassment for Liverpool.

#1 Liverpool 0-2 Chelsea: April 2014

Coming into the match on the back of a 16-game unbeaten run, Liverpool were favourites to come out winners or at least earn a draw. But Steven Gerrard's slip towards the end of the first half shifted the momentum towards Chelsea. The outcome of the match meant the Premier League title race was still wide open and left Chelsea two points behind Liverpool.

It was yet another tactical masterpiece by Jose Mourinho as he made sure Liverpool’s players were frustrated as Chelsea sat back. The Blues received a bonus at the end of the first half when Steven Gerrard slipped while trying to control Sakho's pass. It allowed Demba Ba to speed away towards the goal unopposed and slot the ball past Mignolet.

At half time, Liverpool fans were heard chanting Stevie G's name, but it just didn't work for the Liverpool skipper that day. They started the second half on an attacking note, but the Chelsea defence was strong and handled the situation well. Sturridge's introduction and the much talked about partnership with Luis Suarez didn't seem to have that much of an effect as their partnership failed to trouble the Chelsea defence.

A Willian goal from a Torres assist in injury time meant Chelsea went home with all three points and in touching distance of the title contenders Liverpool.
