As we come to the conclusion of a drama-filled Premier League season, with an extremely high number of twists and turns, we look at the best and most valuable players that have made an impact for each team this season. While some players are a definite surprise, it is a choice made after considering both their EA Sports PPI Ratings as well as their stats in the other departments.Disclaimer: The views expressed here are the writer's opinion and do not reflect the views of the site.
#20 Sunderland: Adam Johnson
While it has been nothing but a disappointing season for the Black Cats, Adam Johnson has shown why they paid a handsome fee to attain his services from Manchester City last season. He scored important goals in both the Premier League and Capital One Cup where they reached the final, and also helped in the league double over arch rivals Newcastle.
For Sunderland, promotion would not only mean top flight football but also the retention of the right flank-based Johnson, who though inconsistent has been instrumental in the victories that Sunderland really needed.
#19 Cardiff City: David Marshall
Stats say that David Marshall has produced the most saves by any goalkeeper this season - and he has been the fine line between a 1-0 loss and a 3-0 loss. With a lacklustre defence in front of him, crucial and well-judged saves have ensured that some of the unconvincing displays by the Welsh outfit aren’t that severely reflected on the scoreline.
While Cardiff could turn out in the Championship next season, it looks like Marshall will remain loyal, having signed a contract till 2018.
#18 Fulham: Steve Sidwell
Fulham’s torrid season has coincided with Steve Sidwell’s resurgence. The former Chelsea, Aston Villa and Arsenal midfielder has been the only consistent performer in Fulham colours this season, popping in with good and crucial goals at timely junctions.
A few spectaculars and key interceptions has made Sidwell the first name on the teamsheet - a contrast to last season where he struggled to get into the first team. With Fulham almost having made the great escape, Sidwell can just hope that there is another season in the Premier League at Craven Cottage next year.
#17 Norwich City: Robert Snodgrass
The former Leeds United player, who scored the winner against Spurs at Carrow Road a month ago, has not been at his best for most periods due to recurring injuries. Without him, Norwich haven’t had a great record and have looked lesser likely to score.
Even though the Norwich unit hasn’t been near the average attacking force this season, Snodgrass has given them hope - 6 goals and the ability to produce the dangerous cros. It has given the supporters something to believe in.
He's another star uncertain about his future, a lot depends on these last few fixtures of the season.
#16 West Bromwich Albion: Morgan Amalfitano
There has been no ‘star player’ in this West Brom team as such this season, but if there is one player who has contributed more than others and especially at crucial junctures, it is the on-loan player from Marseille, Morgan Amalfitano.
The highlight in his season was the winner at Old Trafford, the best victory of the whole season for the Baggies. With his future unclear due to his parent club, Marseille, keeping quiet, West Brom should try and sign the Frenchman on a permanent basis.
#15 Swansea City: Wilfried Bony
While most strikers who come from a weaker league take a season or two to get used to the physicality of the Premier League, it has been no problem for the Ivory Coast frontman. Bought for a handsome fee, the striker has scored 12 goals so far and most of them have come off his head.
Most teams have marked Bony with either their tallest or best defender, knowing fully well that he has a great eye for goal with both head and foot. Bony had also helped Swansea reach the knockout stages of the Europa League and even in their run in the Capital One Cup.
We should see a much better return in terms of goals from Bony next season though, as the one-season buffer is always given to foreign strikers.
#14 Aston Villa: Fabian Delph
If there is a player who has produced vital performances in big games among the bottom 10 clubs, it has to be Fabian Delph. From a cheeky flick against Chelsea and other stunning goals, Delph has shown his composure at the big stage.
He has played in mixed roles this season, from being a deep-lying midfielder to a box-to-box midfielder, where manager Paul Lambert has stated that it is only a matter of time before Delph becomes part of the England Nation Team’s setup. For sure, the next two seasons should see encouraging improvement from Delph.
#13 Hull City: Tom Huddlestone
From two injury-plagued seasons with Tottenham Hotspur, Huddlestone decided to move to Hull, which has proved to be an inspired decision. Having scored his first goal in two seasons (and finally cutting his hair in almost that time), Tom Huddlestone has been highly rated by manager Steve Bruce and even linked to the England World Cup squad this year.
He has made his presence felt in matches, both physically and with his fantastic long-range passing. With starts much easier to come by, Huddlestone is really showing Spurs why they should have thought more while letting him go. Thanks to him, Hull City have secured Premier League football for next season and are now setting their sights on a FA Cup title at Wembley.
#12 West Ham United: Kevin Nolan
Kevin Nolan has fought off disciplinary issues to resurrect the Hammers’ campaign, even in the absence of Andy Carroll. From 19th position in the table in December, West Ham has made Boleyn Ground something close to a fortress, having beaten everyone below them since January.
They have Nolan to thank for starting the resurgence, and one should remember his bicycle kick against Newcastle. Certainly, after the return of Andy Carroll from injury, it looks like the Nolan-Carroll pair could return to their old Newcastle days come next season.
#11 Crystal Palace: Julian Speroni
Argentine Julian Speroni was unconvincing in his spell under Ian Holloway this season, but like fellow players, his form has skyrocketed to being one of the best shot-stoppers in the past month. Crucial saves against teams that Palace were fancied to lose to, have been key in the London based outfit moving from rock bottom to 11th and assured of safety.
Though 34 years of age, and not having played much Premier League football, Speroni has been something of a rock in 2014.
#10 Stoke City: Charlie Adam
For a team that rely mostly on set-pieces for goals, Charlie Adam has been the architect, both from providing the deliveries and by striking from distance. A typical Stoke player with his tackling and physical football, Adam has also given Stoke the added advantage of an excellent crosser for the likes of Peter Crouch.
While Stoke struggled to get the ball rolling in the early stages of the season, it was Charlie Adam who led them to victory over Manchester United, struck a beauty against Liverpool, Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Aston Villa. The former Liverpool and Blackpool midfielder has now become the top tackler in the Premier League this season, something that runs through Stoke City players’ blood.
#9 Newcastle: Loic Remy
Without doubt, it is the on-loan QPR striker who has led Newcastle out of relegation danger, and even led to top 6 hopes at one stage. While he may not stay at the Sports Direct Arena next season, Remy has scored 13 goals so far, and 9 of them have been in winning causes.
In December, it would have been unwise to predict how Newcastle would finish this season, and journalists predicted even a top 6 at that stage. However, a combination of extremely poor form and plenty of off-the-field incidents have severely derailed Newcastle’s quest for a decent league standing.
They currently lie 9th and look like they will slip down the pecking order.
#8 Southampton: Adam Lallana
The No.20 and the talismanic captain of the Saints has been truly inspirational this season. While narrowly escaping relegation last season, Southampton have shown much better form and converted performances into results this season, arguably thanks to Mauricio Pochettino’s winning mentality.
Few clubs have been as delighted as the Saints this season, not only because of their good performance, but also with 4 of their English players turning out in national colours this season. Rickie Lambert, Jay Rodriguez, Adam Lallana and Luke Shaw have caught the eye of the nation, and it would be wise to say that 2 of the quartet will head to Brazil come June.
Lallana’s goal against Hull at the St. Mary’s stadium pretty much sums up his season. He has found the net much easier than last season, and also formed a lethal partnership with fellow English players Lambert and Rodriguez. He has also impressed many experts across England with his hardworking displays, and this ever-smiling Englishman should finish off a brilliant season with a good showing in Brazil.
#7 Manchester United: Wayne Rooney
Take out Wayne Rooney’s goals for Manchester United this season, and they would probably be lying in the relegation scrap. While Manchester United’s season has time and again gone from bad to worse, a new bumper contract has coincided with the return of the goal-scoring Wayne Rooney.
The stunning halfway line strike against West Ham even brought a smile on David Beckham’s face – something that has given United supporters a man to believe in. The contract and a new lease of life, and the eventual transfer of Vidic to Inter Milan has made Rooney the prime candidate for the captain’s armband come next season.
While Manchester United have scored almost a fraction of the goals they scored last season, they have Rooney to thank for turning abysmal performances into a respectable result.
#6 Tottenham Hotspur: Emmanuel Adebayor
17 games into the season, Emmanuel Adebayor’s season almost looked over. Just 45 minutes in the rout against Man City was what Andre-Villas Boas gave the Togo striker till that point. It was however, a huge turning point for both Spurs and Adebayor when Tim Sherwood was appointed as manager.
Since the first start against Southampton, where he scored a brace to lead Spurs to a crucial victory, he has now amassed 10 goals and helped Spurs cement their place in the top 6 just when things seemed to be going out of control. While the Sherwood-Adebayor duo has blossomed, a more attacking approach coupled with the return of the REAL Adebayor has made the Togo international a force to reckon with again.
He has also formed a deadly partnership with Christian Eriksen, and has relegated Roberto Soldado to second-choice in the pecking order. With Sherwood’s departure at the end of the season all but inevitable, Adebayor could force a move elsewhere come August.
#5 Everton: Seamus Coleman
When Roberto Martinez arrived at the club, supporters weren’t sure whether he would continue to help with the rise of Everton right back Seamus Coleman. Fsat forward to April and it has been nothing but an inspired decision to appoint Martinez as the manager. They are now firmly in the mix for the final Champions League spot, and have the likes of Coleman, Baines, Lukaku, Deulofeu, Mirallas, Barry and James McCarthy, who have all hit top form this season.
While previous seasons were not consistent enough for Coleman, the Irish right back has scored 6 goals (all of them either spectacular goals or winners) and has formed a rock-like back four with Phil Jagielka, Sylvain Distin and Leighton Baines. Come next season, expect even more from this fantastic right back.
#4 Arsenal: Olivier Giroud
Few would disagree with Giroud being the player of the season for Arsenal, but the stats and his presence have made a huge difference to this Arsenal side. He started off the season with a flurry of goals, before there was a drought, and then he was back to scoring ways. He has been the most influential in terms of goals scored for the Gunners, and led the line in the absence of long-term absentee Aaron Ramsey in the most testing 3 months of the season since the turn of the year.
While some would say it was unfair to not give Giroud the start against Bayern Munich at home in the Champions League, he has also led Arsenal on the brink of their first silverware in 8 years in the form of the FA Cup. Arsene Wenger’s trust in him has seemed to have paid off this season, but there are still doubts over his consistency and fitness issue.
Surely, the link-up play being the lone striker has helped Giroud turn provider on many occasions, as illustrated by that wonderful Wilshere goal against Norwich, and the Rosicky goal against Sunderland.
#3 Manchester City: Yaya Toure
The Ivorian has been time and again underestimated as one of the world’s best midfielders, but how he has responded to those critics this season! In the build up to the game against Barcelona in the Champions League, few journalists even questioned the Catalan club over why they let him go – and the younger Toure has been phenomenal in the absence of Sergio Aguero for most parts this season.
While he is third in the league's goal scoring charts, his driving runs and those wonderful free kicks have been nothing but world class. He single-handedly led City to a comeback victory in the Capital One Cup final against Sunderland, and the double over city rivals Manchester United.
His working relationship with manager Manuel Pellegrini has been excellent, and he has also shown promising signs of a growing partnership with Fernandinho. No matter when Aguero does return to his prime, Yaya Toure will be the go to man once he comes back from the recent injury he picked up.
#2 Chelsea: Eden Hazard
While last season was a curtain raiser for Eden Hazard, he has become much more of a goal-scoring midfielder this season. His exceptional performances against Manchester City and the hat-trick against Newcastle have been the highlights of a wonderful season under Jose Mourinho. Often attacking from the left wing, Hazard’s movements both on and off the ball has been terrific, and he has time and again popped up with the goals in place of the misfiring centre forwards.
The wily Belgian has also become a permanent fixture in Mourinho’s ever-rotating XI, which shows that he has been their go-to man every game. While some eyebrows were raised when Chelsea paid £32 million for his services last season, it has proved to be some kind of a bargain.
While some rumours about a possible move to PSG next season have been doing the rounds, Hazard should most definitely stay at Stamford Bridge come next season.
#1 Liverpool: Luis Suarez
In May 2013, after the season had come to an end, Luis Suarez had gone back to Uruguay a disappointed man. Having been suspended for 10 games after the infamous bite on Branislav Ivanovic, Suarez turned into a dirty devil against the ever supporting club. He accused them of not providing him with Champions League football and not supporting him enough when he was criticised by the British media time and again for his antics.
He claimed that Real Madrid was the best destination for him, and when Arsenal came looking for his signature, even surpassing the release clause in Suarez’s contract, Liverpool stood firm. With a contract that was then going to expire in 2016, they knew better than most the importance of keeping Suarez at the club in a season that would be termed as a failure if they didn’t finish in the top 4 placings.
While having an excellent man-manager in Brendan Rodgers who has transformed Liverpool’s team, the most lethal strike partnership in Suarez and Sturridge has been another reason by Suarez extended his deal till 2018. Now favourites for the title, Liverpool have actually surpassed Suarez’s expectations. He has now learnt English and finally bought a home in Liverpool (to show that he is here to stay) and the change in confidence and attitude have all been in the right direction.
Barring a few dives, Suarez has never caught the wrong attention, and with 30 goals (at the time of writing) already in his account, he is the sure favourite to win the PFA award and in all probability, be nominated for the Ballon d’Or next year.
