Messi won the award from 2009 to 2012

The Ballon d’Or has gone to an Argentine player on five occasions but the winner on all four occasions was Lionel Messi.

Messi won his first Ballon d’Or in 2009. This was also the last award before it was renamed as FIFA Ballon d’Or. No player has won the award more times than the Argentine and he also won it in four consecutive years.

In 2015, he was the overwhelming favourite to win for a record-extending fifth time and duly did so.
