Top 10 Jose Mourinho quotes after returning to Chelsea

Shaumik

Jose Mourinho, the self proclaimed Special One, is perhaps one of the most interesting personalities in the world of football. Be it the alleged incident of sneaking into Stamford Bridge in a laundry basket, or predicting Rijkaards starting XI in a press conference, Mourinho and controversies arelike Michael and Lucifer! Just like we quote Shakespeare, there will probably come a time when people will quote Mourinho. Be it the quality of eggs in the supermarket, or calling up Ghanas president,he is always ready witha witty Mourinho-esqe response. Heres a look at his recent quotes that have cause waves in the media.

#10 The Happy One

I am the Happy One (Source: BBC)

In his very first conference as a Chelsea manager back in 2004, he proclaimed himself the Champions League winner and a ‘Special One’. When he returned in 2013, reporters were quick to ask him whether he still considered himself the special one, to which he smiled and said- “I am now the happy one.”

#9 Europa League would be a big disappointment

I don't want to win the Europa League. It would be a big disappointment for me. I don't want my players to feel the Europa League is our competition. (Source: BBC)

Mourinho inherited a Chelsea who had just won the Europa League under interim manager Rafa Benitez. Mourinho was quick to set his high standards, making it clear he despised the Thursday night competition. Chelsea went through a rebuilding phase and did not win anything in the last season, but it is yet to be seen how his future plans turn out to be.

#8 Rooney or Bust

I didnt say, "You will be a second choice for me." We are trying to get a player that a manager told will be a second option for him. We are not going for Van Persie. They dont have to be against me. If I say Ramires is a second option for me and he plays when Lampard is tired or injured and if someone comes here to get Ramires, nobody is upset. (Source: Daily Mail)

In the summer transfer window, Mourinho flirted with Rooney, bidding multiple times for the striker, testing newly appointed Manchester United manager David Moyes resolve about not selling Rooney. Mourinho continued the mind games until the transfer window closed. Finally, Mourinho gave Rooney a 48 hour ultimatum to decide if he wanted to join Chelsea. Perhaps, he did it just to distract the United management from pursuing other interests in the transfer window? We will never know.

#7 Chelsea kill Mourinho every game

They kill me. Every game I am tired. At half-time we should be relaxed with a comfortable result and we werent. (Source: Daily Mail)

It was the Boxing Day in 2013 and Chelsea played Swansea, managing a narrow 1-0 victory but 3 points nonetheless, which kept them close to the then league leaders. However, Chelseas strikers were largely ineffective, missing glorious chances on the way. A visibly irritated Mourinho stated that his strikers kill him every game. Unfortunately, this didnt cheer up his strikers and they continued their dismal performance all season long, albeit a few flashes of brilliance (Remember the Ba goal against PSG?)

#6 Lampard is on a break

It's not the end of Frank Lampard's career in Chelsea. It's just a little break. (Source: The Guardian)

Those who have watched F.R.I.E.N.D.S. over and over again know very well the devastation “a break” can cause. Jokes aside, when news came out that Chelsea weren’t extending Frank Lampard’s contract, Mourinho was quick to say that Lampard will come back some day- maybe as his assistant. But wait, is Mourinho a fan of Friends too?

#5 Wenger the Whiner

Wenger complaining [about Mata transfer] is normal because he always does (Source: The Guardian)

Mourinho sold Mata to Manchester United after Chelsea had played both matches against them in the league. However, United were yet to play a match each against Arsenal and City, the other Premier League contenders. Naturally, Wenger was not so happy about the situation, nor was Pellegrini. Mourinho loves to take digs at Wenger, and this time was no different.

#4 Wenger the failure specialist

[Wenger] is a specialist in failure. I'm not. So if he is right and I am afraid of failure it is because I didn't fail many times. The reality is he's a specialist because eight years without a piece of silverware, that's failure. If I do that in Chelsea, eight years, I leave and don't come back. (Source: BBC)

Just like #5 on our list, Mourinho’s mind games with Wenger sometimes cross the line. He got into trouble in his first tenure as a Chelsea manager for dubbing his Arsenal counterpart a voyeur. This time, however, he took a dig at Arsenal’s failure to win any trophies for a long time. Wenger had the last laugh though, as Arsenal won the FA Cup this season, while Chelsea were trophyless.

#3 300 million for Oscar and Hazard

No, it's not irritating. It's no problem. If there is Financial Fair Play, they don't have the money to buy them. If there is no Financial Fair Play, £300m for both, Chelsea have to think about it. (Source: The Telegraph)

Back when Chelsea were drawn against PSG, certain reports popped up in the media linking Oscar and Hazard to a PSG move. When Mourinho was asked about this in a press conference, he coolly put a price tag on both of them- £300 million.

#2 Dear football philosophers, Jose Mourinho has a message

You know, in this moment, football is full of philosophers. It's full of people who understand much more than me. Is full of people with fantastic theoretical philosophies. Amazing. But the reality is always the reality. A team that doesn't defend well doesn't have many chances to win. A team that doesn't score lots of goals, if it concedes lots of goals is completely in trouble. A team without balance is not a team. And after that, I can't say much more than this. (Source: SBNation)

When football critics far and wide criticized his style of parking the bus, he just came out bluntly on the eve of his second leg semi final against Athletico and gave them a message- I dont like you! Unfortunately, his words came back to haunt him as Chelsea lost 3-1 at home to crash out of the Champions League, thereby ending all hopes of a trophy that season.

#1 A race between two horses and a little horse

Two horses and a little horse that still needs milk and to learn how to jump. A horse that next season can race. (Source: The Independent)

Back in February when the title race was heating up between Chelsea, Arsenal and City, Mourinho was asked whether he thinks the Premier League is a three horse race. Interestingly, although Chelsea were in a good position, Mourinho refused to acknowledge that Chelsea could challenge for the title. He did mean, however, that Chelsea would be a serious contender next year.
