Individual goals are always great to watch. The skill involved from one player to make the goal happen is a delight. But football being a team game, it is even more fun to watch more than one or two members of the team coming together to make a goal happen. The complexities involved in a team goal are higher and the end product is that much more satisfying. Here’s a list of 11 such goals, in no particular goal. We surely would have missed some very good goals, so do let us know in the comments!
#1 Paul Scholes vs Panathinaikos
At one point in the move, the commentators were compelled to state that this wasn’t showboating as much as being professional as Manchester United were trying to run down the clock.
But the important thing was that they kept possession, without ever in danger of losing it, playing it back as well, and in the end, Sheringham’s pass to Scholes saw an exquisite finish from the midfield maestro!
#2 Cristiano Ronaldo vs Ajax
Real Madrid are mostly known for their counterattacking game, but even their fans would have been delighted with the pace with which this counterattack was done.
It took all of 16 seconds for the ball taken from the Madrid box into the goal of Ajax, and though the end product was Ronaldo’s, he would agree that this was one brilliant team goal in which everything came together perfectly.
#3 Carlos Alberto vs Italy
On the biggest stage of them all, Brazil showed why they are always the best and most entertaining team in the world. In the 1970 World Cup final against Italy, Brazil notched up a great team goal to finish off the game and be crowned World Champions once again.
Whether it was dribbling past 4 players to keep possession or waiting for the right moment to release the ball, it had all the ingredients needed for the perfect world cup final goal.
#4 Gary Lineker vs FC Porto
Once upon a time, Tottenham Hotspur were the entertaining club in North London, and Gary Lineker was the chief tormentor. While their neighbours may have taken the entertainment mantle for now, this team goal shows the glorious football Spurs were known to play.
With passes around the bo, they were patient in the buildup, and in the end, the final pass was just good enough for Lineker to latch onto and score.
#5 Mick Channon vs Liverpool
“You won’t see a better goal than that one” screamed the commentator after Mick Channon scored the goal, and he wouldn’t be far wrong. Southampton, playing against Liverpool, started out from the back and made their way to the front with precise passing and quick movement.
In the end, the goal was too much for the Liverpool defence and neither could the goalkeeper do anything about it.
#6 Esteban Cambiasso vs Serbia and Montenegro
This was a goal that the Argentinians concocted over 25 moves, and in the end the goal was well-deserved in a game that saw them finish 6-0 winners. Cambiasso was heavily involved in the move, so it was only right that he put the finishing touch to the goal.
The game was in the 2006 World Cup group stage, and looking at it now, you would have to wonder what could have gone wrong for them to not finish strongly in the tournament.
#7 David Silva vs Poland
Another great team that scored fantastic goals was Spain during their golden run of trophies in the last 6 years.
There may be far too many examples of their tiki-taka football, but this goal by David Silva against Poland during an international friendly in 2010 was a great example of how everyone in the team was on the same page. It also highlights the greatness of Iniesta and his ability to conjure great passes.
#8 Ashley Young vs Real Madrid
Yes, you read it right. Ashley Young vs Real Madrid. As much as he’s derided by fans and rivals, when he finishes, he does it well.
This goal though, cannot be fully attributed to him as the entire team was instrumental in making it happen. He probably was in the right place at the right time, but it still needed to be scored.
#9 Carlos Vela vs Bolton Wanderers
Arsenal, having been known as Barcelona-lite for quite some time, have had some great team goals of their own. Last season’s goals from Jack Wilshere and Tomas Rosicky come to mind.
But this goal by Vela involved more moves, almost 20 going by the commentator, and the final ball from Fabregas also showed why most Gooners were distraught that he signed up with Chelsea.
#10 Marc Overmars vs Liverpool
His move to Barcelona may not have worked out the best for him, but you could see why Marc Overmars would fit in a club like Barca.
In this game against Liverpool, Barcelona kept passing the ball around, with the Liverpool players unable to get anywhere close to it. In the end, Xavi’s through ball opened up the defence for Overmars to do the finishing.
#11 Jack Wilshere vs Norwich
Voted as the best goal of the 2013/14 Premier League season, this strike from Jack Wilshere against Norwich City was described by Jamie Redknapp as ‘the finest team goal of the season and one of the greatest you are likely to see.’
Following some slick and rapid passing movement involving Santi Cazorla, Olivier Giroud and Wilshere, the goal stands as one of the best team goals of all-time.
