Ah…The good ol’ medieval times!!! When chivalry was at its romantic best!!! Not that Modern Times get boring, but nothing can beat the old times’ charm, even in the gaming world. Bullet-time and all other jazz are fine, but really, there is nothing more smashing than wielding a huge silver sword and cutting off a dragon’s head.This time, we present to you, ten superb games that lets you be the knight in shining armor, at least in games. Take out those swords, soldiers, the war is about to begin!!!

#10 Dark Souls

Premise: You are an unnamed prisoner in the dark kingdom of Lodran, who seeks out what happened to the undead around you. A lot of chaos, magic and other mumbo-jumbo ensure…

The best part of this game is that it is supported with minimal plot setting. You have to pick up the hints and clues as to what is happening around you, to what you need to do, with the little bits of information you get your hands on. Sure, it has magic and stuff, but that’s what makes the game so appealing.

#9 Chivalry: Medieval Warfare

Premise: There is a civil war brewing in the nation of Agatha. You have to choose either The Agathian Knights or the Mason Order, in this revolution, so that your side can control the region.

One of the goriest game in this list, the gameplay is such that it feels like you are fighting an actual war with a lot of melee weapons like swords, hatchets, maces, crossbows etc. You can crush your enemy’s skull with weapons, or even chop off their limbs with realistic animations. Clearly not for the faint-hearted!

#8 Arcania: Gothic 4

Premise: A returning warrior finds his village looted and burnt down by marauders. Seeking revenge, he goes after the attackers, only to realise there are darker forces at play here.

This adventure game lives up to its name, as every minute detail of the game screams GOTHIC!!! Every activity in the game is crafted with perfect accuracy, you really feel like you are living in the era. The quests are also pretty intense. Try it out if you have a Goth lurking somewhere inside you.

#7 Assassins Creed

Premise: A normal young man, Desmond, is kidnapped and is made to relive the memories of his previous incarnation – A Third Crusade assassin named Altaïr ibn-La'Ahad.

I could list a few of the AC titles here, but I will go with the first one – the game that started it all. The game that made Animagus a household name, something even Harry Potter series in the entirety couldn’t do. The addictive gameplay could get you hooked for hours, and will leave you asking for more. The sequels will give you just that!

#6 The Witcher 2

Premise: An amnesiac monster slayer is forced to take sides in the war between the King’s men and the rebel elves, while a powerful assassin lurks nearby. And, of course, you also have a variety of monsters, including a dragon!!!

Ok, I agree this game has dragons, and ghouls and elves and witches, which are nothing but rumors, unless science proves otherwise. But that’s what makes those old times, and this game so much fun. As the titular Witcher, you have to pick up pieces of your lost memories, as well figuring out what the hell is wrong with every kingdom that you visit. And, also there is that little incentive of flirting with every beautiful woman that you meet.

#5 Risen

Premise: An unnamed hero is marooned on a strange island which he has to later protect from the wrath of a monster known as the Titan.

Risen is a much underrated game that needs to be played at least once, if you are a fan of medieval RPG’s like The Witcher. Be it the gameplay, or the graphics or the action, the game scores high on each parameter. The sequel caters to pirate lovers, so stick to this one if you want to have a taste of good ol’ medieval times.

#4 War Of The Roses

Premise: Based on the actual War of the Roses that took place in the fifteenth century, you have to choose either of the two factions, Lancaster or York, to gain dominance in the civil war.

Somewhat similar to Chivalry: Medieval Warfare in terms of gameplay, the game succeed in almost depicting the details of the war. You can be a Guardsman, long-bowman and foot-knight in the army. If you want your medieval games to be as realistic as possible; i.e. without any mumbo-jumbo, search no further.

#3 The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Premise: An escaped prisoner is entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the kingdom from a brute dragon – who was the actual reason why the prisoner managed to escape. Ungrateful fellow, isn’t he?

I am pretty sure there is no one out there who has managed to complete all the quests and side-quests in this amazingly engrossing game. Sure there are dragons, but let’s leave out the frivolous details. You already know about the almost unlimited quests, so let’s take about the setting and landscape. This is as open-world as a game can get. The castles and villages are so real-like, that it’s like a dream come true for any historian. Premise: You are given the responsibility of handling a new region by the king, which you have to rebuild, develop, and maintain properly. Parallel to this, is a sinister plot to overthrow the Emperor, and you have to stop that from happening.

If you love building strategy games like Simcity and the Movies, you are going to suck up to this one. After all, who doesn’t love to keep a tab of an entire city? You also get to spy on your colleagues to find out which among you is the traitor. So you get to be Sherlock Holmes and Archimedes in the same game!!!
