Before the match, the Indian Super League standings read Goa at the 6th place with Pune languishing at the bottom. As a result, this was a must win match for both the teams. Both the teams, although looked good on paper, there wasn’t any lack of big names. Both got good foreign coaches, their marquee players are former World Cup winners and they've got excellent stadiums to play their football in.Pune however, took the full advantage of Pires, not playing for Goa and went on to score twice to seal the victory against FC Goa which made them go into the 5th place in the standings
#1 Kostas Katsouranis & David Trezeguet end Pune\'s goal drought
Kostas Katsouranis, although he was shown with a yellow card in the 16th minute of the game for a challenge on Gabriel Fernandez broke the shackles by scoring the first goal for FC Pune City in the Indian Super League campaign.
The former Greece skipper, after having two bad games, while dashing into the box took a smart volley to the top corner in a Trezeguet clever free-kick, which is floated into the box and the ball is headed through to the far post.
Trezeguet, with already an assist to his name scored the second goal of the match, assuring a Pune win in the 81st minute.
#2 Cleen sheet for Belardi
Emanuele Belardi has managed to keep his second clean sheet in the Indian Super League.
After an humiliating match against Mumbai City FC where he conceded 5 goals, the Italian pulled some important saves in the match which led to Pune City, keeping another clean sheet and also with its first match.
#3 Andre Santos disappoint in front of goal
Andre Santos, the Brazilian, after playing a full 90 minutes and scoring a goal against Atletico de Kolkata struggled to make an impact against FC Pune City.
Santos was unlucky to have not scored after he, at the far post attempted with a diving header which missed the target by inches to a pinpoint cross delivered by Bruno Pinheiro.
Santos, again, unleashed a venomous left footed shot from 30-yeards out which struck the crossbar and went out of play, much to the disappointment of Zico and co.
Though, he might have failed to hit the net, he did show some spectacular skills – especially with the Zidane-esque roulette to bring the crowd on its feet.
#4 Formation change worked for FC Pune City
Colomba, after going on with a 4-3-3 formation in their first match against Delhi Dynamos which ended in a draw then, reshaped his team with a 3-5-2 formation in the match against Mumbai.
Although Pune were outplayed in both games, they did hold their shape better with four men at the back.
But a 4-3-3 would mean strikers Trezeguet and Dudu may not play together. So it meant the formation had to be either a 4-4-1-1 or a 4-4-2 to accommodate both players.
Colomba, had to make some decisions including that of how to indulge in midfielder, Kostas Katsouranis in the midfield. The former Greece skipper, who had two bad games and needed to impose himself in the centre of the park for Pune to compete better did end up, doing such as he scored a goal for Pune.
#5 Winless streak comes to an end
After starting off the two Indian Super League campaign away in a goalless draw against Delhi Dynamos and a humiliating 5-0 hammering at the hands of Mumbai City, Pune FC were all set for their first home match against FC Goa at the Balewadi Stadium, Pune.
Pune City’s first home game indeed turned out to be a pleasing one as the team put up a brilliant show, leaving behind the terrible show in the last game.
The home side enjoyed a lot of possession in what was a comfortable win and a much needed confidence booster for the squad as they now look to build on this crucial win.
