She is the Women’s Bantamweight champion. She has crossed over from combat sports to Hollywood. The biggest draw of UFC, the most dangerous unarmed woman to walk the planet and the list can go on, but you won't find enough words to describe this freak of an athlete, Ronda Rousey.Rewind yourselves a couple years back and women in MMA were almost non-existent. Credit goes to Gina Carrano for being the first women from MMA to bring some attention towards the division, but it wasn't still on a larger scale until Ronda came along. After Strikeforce was bought by UFC, president Dana White made Ronda the women's champion by default and since then she has been undefeated.Undeniably, the greatest female MMA fighter to ever step foot into the Octagon, Rousey has made an impact like no other not only in the sport, but in mainstream media too. In a male dominated sport that has existed well over 20 years, Ronda single-handedly paved the way for the women who aspire to become MMA fighters. For a brand which didn’t have a women’s section, UFC now has over 17 female fighters. That isn’t sufficient to describe Ronda’s massive contribution to this sport, but that should do enough considering these aspects are something that people will usually come across while reading about her. But how well do you know about Ronda, the story underneath the dominating, trash-talking and confident girl? Here, we take a look at 10 things you probably didn’t know or should know about her.
#1 Ronda\'s first visit to ER was because of a Raisinet

As revealed by her older sister Maria Burns Ortiz, Ronda’s first visit ever to an Emergency Room was because of a Raisinet (Chocolate-covered raisin). According to her, she, Ronda and her other sister were having fun by putting candy in their nostrils and making silly faces just like any other normal kids.
But Ronda pushed on a bit too far and as she couldn’t get it out, they had to get her medical attention. But when they pulled into the parking lot of the nearest ER, the candy dislodged and popped out. The chocolate layer had melted just enough to let the raisin slide out.
To this day, Ronda avoids Raisinets like the plague.
#2 She wanted to be a Marine Biologist
Ronda’s first preference for a career wasn’t fighting and putting opponents in an armbar but to be a marine biologist as revealed by Maria. She always had a fascination for sea life and would sketch dolphins almost on everything.
She also has an affiliation for art as she has a habit of sketching and doodling often. She even painted a full mural in her childhood bedroom that features kelp, a sea lion and random fish.
#3 Rowdy Roddy Piper approved her nickname
It’s no secret by now that Ronda is an avid wrestling fan. She has attended WWE’s biggest pay-per-views including SummerSlam 2014 and most recently at Wrestlemania 31 where she got her Wrestlemania moment alongside The Rock against Stephanie McMahon and Triple H.
And one her biggest childhood heroes has been WWE Hall of Famer Rowdy Roddy Piper. Initially, her friends gave her the nickname “Rowdy” but she chose not to use it because she thought it would be disrespectful to Piper.
But after meeting Piper through Gene LeBell (who helped train both), Piper found it absolutely fine and personally gave Rousey his approval.
#4 Paper cut is her worst pain
It’s obvious that when you are competing in the Octagon, you leave pain outside the cage knowing what you are getting into. And for Ronda, she isn’t concerned about the injuries or pain she can incur while fighting her opponents.
But papercuts? That is a different story. She hates papercuts the most and feels uneasy even talking about it. In an interview with Maxim, the women’s Bantamweight champion said, "Yeah. Ugh, I got a paper cut the other day, and I had chills for, like, an hour. I hate paper cuts. Talking about it right now makes me uneasy."
#5 She worked in a graveyard shift in 24 hour fitness in California
In the 2008 Beijing Olympics, Ronda became the first American women to win a bronze medal in Judo. But after her achievement, she had nowhere to go and no job to fall back on. As quoted by her, “There’s nothing put in place for Olympians after they're done. They give you a couple grand, a handshake and they kick your a** out the door.”
To figure out what she wanted to do in her life next, she took up a job at a 24 Hour Fitness in California. It was a difficult period in her life as she was trying to figure out her way ahead. She quit the job after she returned to fighting in 2010 at an MMA gym in Los Angeles.
#6 She is a gamer girl
Ronda’s post-fight plans is to lie on the couch for two weeks and play video games as stated by her sister Maria.
Maria said, “Her Pokemon obsession has been well documented, but Ronda is a serious gamer beyond Pikachu. (For the record, Ronda's favorite Pokemon is actually Mew.) Nowadays, she is more likely to be found playing World of Warcraft. At family gatherings, she dominates at Mario Kart. Her character of choice: Black Yoshi. She also has impressive Just Dance skills.
“But beyond playing games, she is taking a role in creating them. She serves as a storyline consultant -- and not in the ‘name only’ sense -- for 7 Generation Games, an educational video game company for which she has drafted the stories for several games' side quests and Easter eggs.”
#7 She only dates guys named Bob?
No, not literally. It’s the name that Ronda’s mom uses to address her boyfriends. AnnMaria De Mars, who herself is a 1984 world judo champion, has a policy of calling all of her daughters’ boyfriends and even potential boyfriends by the name "Bob." Her reasoning: "What's the point in learning his name if he's not going to be sticking around?"
She even assigns numbers along with the name so as to differentiate them from one another. For example, Ronda's last boyfriend was "Bob 6." And yes, she calls them that to their faces. So, how does a boyfriend move from Bob to his actual name? The only way that happens is after marrying into the family.
#8 Her pre-fighting ritual
In her interview with Maxim, she explained that it's just a fact that a woman should have sex before getting into a fight. "It's just a medical fact: As a girl, if you have sex before a fight, it raises your testosterone.
People are fascinated by it because that is one difference between men and women. You know, the guys really have to abstain, and the girls are kind of medically encouraged to do the opposite. If it's available to me, then I'm all for it, but otherwise I'm kind of out of luck."
#9 Her life almost ended before it started
Ronda had to go years of speech therapy as a child as she couldn’t speak properly. The reason? Her life almost ended while being born.
According to reports, while she was in her mother’s womb, the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck and deprived her of oxygen. As a result of the problem while being conceived, she couldn’t speak clearly as a child.
#10 She cannot stay outside the Octagon for more than two weeks
Ronda is a force to be reckoned with in the cage, but those close to her know facing her two weeks out from a fight is when she's her most scary. It's what she and those around her refer to as "two-week-itis."
During that time, you don't even want to make eye contact with her. She's started cutting weight, so she's hungry. She's training at full speed, so she's tired and irritable. She walks into the Octagon with nerves of steel -- but that's because she did all of her stressing out two weeks earlier.
