Tennis is a sport filled with a lot of emotions. Playing alone on the court for hours at a stretch can take a toll on the players. There are times when certain players come really close to winning a match or reaching a milestone, but fall short at the final hurdle.Watching these players express their emotions after losing is a heartbreaking sight, even for those fans who were favouring the other player on the court. #5 Leonardo Mayer - Shanghai Masters 2014

This should have been a routine win for Roger Federer as he faced the Argentinian Leonardo Mayer in the first round of the Shanghai Masters. But, Federer was taken all the way, and in fact saved 5 match points against Mayer before eventually winning the match.

Mayer had an amazing opportunity to finish the match in his favour with a backhand but fired his shot straight at the net when on match point. Federer ended up taking the match. Mayer broke down immediately as he came to shake hands with Federer at the end of the match. It was truly a heartbreaking moment.

#4 Tommy Robredo - Valencia Open 2014

This was the second time both these players were to face each other in a final in 2014 and it was to be a similar story as Andy Murray battled and came from behind as he saved 5 match points for the second time in the year before defeating the Spaniard.

The reaction from Robredo after losing was funny and at the same time heartbreaking, as he had to endure the same thing for the second time in the year and against the same player.

#3 Nicklas Mahut - Wimbledon 2010

At the 2010 Wimbledon Championships, John Isner defeated Nicolas Mahut in the world's longest ever tennis match. The match lasted 11 hours, 5 minutes.

Everyone could see the contrast of emotions at the end of the match, and as happy everyone felt for American John Isner, you could not help but feel for Nickolas Mahut. Losing after being on the court for more than 11 hours is really heartbreaking.

#2 Andy Murray - Wimbledon 2012

Andy Murray came into the Wimbledon 2012 final looking for his first ever Grand Slam win and was looking to be the first British player to do so. He was up against Roger Federer who had not won a slam since Australian Open 2010.

It was not to be Murray’s day, however, as he fell short and lost in 4 sets to Roger. He could not control himself as he broke down while addressing the fans in the stadium. It truly was a heartbreaking sight for everyone.

#1 Roger Federer - Australian Open 2009

Roger Federer came into 2009 after winning just one Grand Slam the previous year in the form of the U.S Open in 2008. He lost his Wimbledon throne to Rafael Nadal in 2008 and wanted to avenge his loss to the Spaniard at Melbourne.

Unfortunately, it was not to be. Rafael Nadal, once again overcame the Swiss Maestro in 5 sets. During the ceremony, Federer broke down into tears. It was a heartbreaking site for any Federer fan. Some people thought that his career would be coming to an end, but he went on to win the French Open and Wimbledon that year and regained his no. 1 ranking.
