Indian sports special - 'First' sports records by Indians

We celebrated national sports day on 29th August 2014. Here is a list of records that Indian athletes achieved for the first time in various sports.

#1 First Olympic team medal

India won its first medal, a Gold for Hockey at the 1928 Summer Olympics Amsterdam, beating the Nethherlands

#2 First Olympic individual medal

K.D. Jadhav won a Bronze for wrestling at the 1952 Summer Olympic Helsinki.

#3 First Olympic individual gold medal

Abhinav Bindra won the first individual gold medal for India in 10 m Air Rifle event at 2008 Beinjing Olympics.

#4 First individual medal by a woman

Karnam Malleswari won the Bronze medal for weighlifting in 54kg class at 2000 Sydney Olympics.

#5 First Formula One race driver

In 2007, Narain Karthikeyan became the first formula 1 driver for India.

#6 First Grand Slam title

Mahesh Bhupathi was the first Indian Tenis player who won the grand slam title for the first time at 1997 French open in mixed doubles category.

#7 First Chess Grandmaster, First FIDE World Chess Champion, First Undisputed World Chess Champion

With no surprise, Viswanathan Anand was the first chess player from India to achieve all these feats.

#8 First Cricket Captain

CK Nayudu was named as the captain for the 1932 tour of England.

#9 First Cricketer to score a century

Lala Amarnath scored the first century for India against England in 1933 in south Bombay.

#10 First Cricket World Cup Win

Indian team led by Kapil Dev won the title at the 1983 Cricket World Cup.

#11 First All England Badminton Championship title

In 1980, Prakash Padukone became the first Indian shuttler to win the prestigious tournament.

#12 First Indian to win a Badminton super series

Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament, by clinching the Indonesia Open on 21 June 2009. She was also the first badminton player from India to win an olympic medal.

#13 First World Champion in Billiards

Wilson Jones became the world champion in billiards in 1958.

#14 First medal in athletics at world championship

Anju Bobby George won bronze at world Athletics chmpionship, 2003.

#15 First Indian to win consecutive medals at Olympics

By wiining silver medal at 2012 London Olympics and a bronze in 2008 Beinjing Olympics, Sushil Kumar became the first Indian athlete to win back to back Olympic medals.
