Seth RollinsThe biggest wrestling event of the summer came and went. WWE hyped the pay-per-view at all the junctions and in the end, they came up with a show that received mixed response. Most of the fans were not happy with the way in which WWE pulled off the whole thing and the internet is buzzing about the same.Despite the negatives that will define Summerslam in the future, there were some memorable moments from the show. Most of these moments will be overlooked by the fans in the coming weeks but they did give the fans a momentary pleasure while they lasted. Now that SummerSlam is done with, here are the best moments from the 2015 edition.
#10 Hardcore legend in the house
No matter how many years pass by, it is always a good sight to see Mick Foley in the squared circle. Foley opened the show with Jon Stewart and got a big pop when he came out. Foley talked about the Hell in A Cell match that happened 17 years ago and also said that he never visited Suplex City.
There was nothing memorable about the promo but seeing Foley at a big stage once again took the fans back to the good old days. Fans were expecting to see names like Rock and Steve Austin at the show and WWE did a good job by giving them Mick Foley at the start itself to keep the buzz going. The master plan came crashing down in the end, but Foley’s appearance was a hit.
#9 Lana comes out wearing denim outfit
Lana was stereotyped ever since she broke up her alliance with Rusev. She continued wearing the suit and WWE made it into a storyline where Summer Rae was trying to impersonate her. WWE, however, gave up on the Lana – Suit love story at SummerSlam and made the Ravishing Russian wear a denim outfit.
She looked exceptional in the new attire and it is a fresh and bold move from WWE’s side. It helps to get rid of the image that Lana had all this time and WWE should think about coming up with similar changes to her character if they are planning to push her to the top one day.
#8 Seth Rollins goes Power Ranger
While Lana’s outfit was a matter of conversation early into SummerSlam, Seth Rollins became the new hero of troll pages later. He came out wearing a full-white costume that immediately triggered the Power Ranger memes. WWE trying something different for the special occasion was a welcome sign but they did make Rollins look ridiculous for some time.
Despite the fun surrounding his entrance, Rollins went on to silence his critics with an excellent performance. Power Rangers costume or not, Rollins is a great wrestler and there is no denying that. He is only five or six colors away from completing the Power Ranger pack.
#7 Best match of the night
Before SummerSlam, the fans were excited about John Cena vs. Seth Rollins and Undertaker vs. Brock Lesnar. However, the match that really stood out was Kevin Owens vs. Cesaro. To get the record straight, both the matches mentioned first were excellent from a wrestling point of view. But due to the botched climaxes, they are getting a lot of heat from the WWE Universe.
The Owens vs. Cesaro affair on the other side is an entirely different story. Everyone knew who the heel was and everyone knew who the face was. Cesaro and Owens had some immense chemistry and skill set and above all, it had a clean ending. The story was perfect and it has helped Owens gain the momentum that he lost over the past few weeks.
#6 Big E tries to pin his own partner
The Tag team match was fast paced and action filled as always. All four teams involved in the bout contributed their best to make the bout look good and in the end, New Day walked out as the champions. It will be another tag title reign for the Heel trio and they had some standout moments in the match as well.
Big E, in particular had a dominant spell. At one point of the match, he tried to pin his own partner, which in turn would have made them the champions then and there. It was something that the fans didn’t expect and the creativity deserves a spot in the list.
#5 Becky Lynch gets the pin
The Divas Revolution worked a match that was filled with spots. There wasn’t any real story to the whole thing but from a neutral point of view, the match was enjoyable. It is a big improvement from the recent years and the women should be happy about the same. The showdown between Team Bella and Team PCB was one of the high points and in the end, WWE allowed Becky Lynch to get the pin.
It is a big moment for Becky and if WWE choose her to go over at SummerSlam, then she is in store for a good push. She might be first in line to get a shot at Nikki Bella and even if it is not the case, we are happy for Becky, aren’t we?
#4 Stephen Amell steals the show
Stephen Amell had a lot of pressure on his shoulders prior to SummerSlam. Every time a celebrity comes in to have a match at a wrestling show, the fans do a post mortem on the celebs to dig out the mistakes. At SummerSlam, however, it was a different story. Amell performed as though he was a professional wrestler. He sold the moves well and at the same time, came up with a few moves as well.
The win that he got alongside Neville was the cherry on the top. Amell really surprised the wrestling fans and it wouldn’t be a surprise if WWE brings him back for WrestleMania next year. On a different note, WWE should look for celebrities like this, who are fans of wrestling rather than bringing in some who think that Undertaker is really a ghost.
#3 Jon Stewart turns heel
The WWE Universe came into SummerSlam expecting a heel turn from Dean Ambrose, Roman Reigns or even John Cena. They did not get any of those but they did get a heel turn from Jon Stewart. A celebrity coming in and screwing up a match is not a rare sight for the WWE fans but when Stewart came in and used the chair on Cena, almost everyone marked out.
Stewart did not have any motives to do the same and this has left the door open for continuing the story. Stewart’s chair shot was a typical mark out moment and as it lead to the crowning of Seth Rollins (which we will see later), it became more lovable. #ThankyouStewart was trending in Twitter by the way.
#2 Undertaker and Lesnar mock each other
The climax of the match between Undertaker and Lesnar was a major talking point from SummerSlam. There is a fair amount of controversy regarding the same but keeping that apart, the match was solid. Taker and Lesnar were really connecting their moves and it felt like there was some real life friction between the two superstars.
One of the best moments of the match came when Lesnar and Undertaker sat up in the middle of the ring mocking eachother. It was a classic old school psychology move from wrestlers and it will be a moment to cherish in the coming years. The story of Lesnar and Taker is far from over and we can expect something similar next time around.
#1 Seth Rollins is the cure
Seth Rollins was on fire at SummerSlam, period. He came into the match as a chicken champion but once the bell rang, we saw the Rollins that we wanted to see as champion. He was working excellent moves throughout the match and really pushed John Cena to the limit. Rollins looked like a real champion out there and it was capped off with a win.
Although, there was some involvement from Jon Stewart in the end, it is a win for Rollins nevertheless and he became the first superstar to hold both the United States championship and the WWE championship. It is a big boost for Rollins and he will probably get a stronger booking from now onwards.
