Home success is highly sought after by any team harbouring hopes of performing well in a tournament. It may be tough to win in a foreign city amid hostile conditions, but if you can balance that by taking full advantage of your own backyard, youre relatively safe. The backing of local fans has spurred many a team to do the impossible and stage inhuman comebacks; the players are inspired to perform out of their skins and bring happiness to the expectant crowd. The familiarity of hosting the opposition on a turf where you play on a daily basis is an added advantage, and its vital that a team makes full use of that.In kabaddi as well, home form plays a major role in deciding who qualifies for the semis and fights for the title. In Season 2 of the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi, Bengaluru Bulls won their last two matches at home to seal the semi-final spot. While they went on to lose in the final, those two home wins are what took them to the semis, according to coach Randhir Singh. On that note, let's take a look at the three most dominant teams at home in the Star Sports Pro Kabaddi history:
#3 Patna Pirates
Pts: 39
Wins: 5
Draws: 4
Losses: 3
Patna Pirates have qualified for the semi-finals in each of the three seasons in the tournament so far. In the first season they finished 3rd, while they lost the third place playoff in the second season. This season, however, they broke the semis jinx before going one step further and winning the trophy by beating U Mumba in the final.
The reigning champions’ run to the semis in each season has been a result of their spectacular form at home. They are a formidable outfit at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, having lost just three matches at home in three seasons. With a total of 39 points out of 60 on offer, Sanjiv Kumar Baliyan has ensured his team almost never disappoints the home crowd.
In the first season Patna were beaten only once at home, while they notched up two wins and a draw in Season 2. In the 2016 edition, they began well with 13 points in 3 matches at home, but suffered a loss to U Mumba in their final home game – their first of the season.
In the coming seasons, Patna Pirates will be banking on their home form to launch a stern defence of their title win.
#2 Telugu Titans
Pts: 45
Wins: 7
Draws: 3
Losses: 2
Telugu Titans are the only team in Pro Kabaddi to have had their home matches in two different cities. In Season 1, they played at Vizag before moving to the capital of Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad, for the next season. However, they returned to Vizag for the 2016 edition.
The return did not bring the results they wanted as the third season was the first time Telugu Titans were beaten on home turf. The men in yellow were unbeaten at home in the first two editions with five wins and three draws, but their run was broken on the opening day of Season 3 by U Mumba.
In the inaugural season, the Titans won 18 points out of 20 on offer, and they won two and drew two in Season 2. In the third edition, Telugu Titans were beaten by the defending champions and Bengal Warriors, but they still managed to get 11 points to top the table after the first leg of the season.
Hyderabad has been a sort of a lucky charm for the team as the second season was the only time they qualified for the semis. The fans would be hoping the Titans return to the capital next year, and with that maybe another semifinal appearance.
#1 U Mumba
Pts: 58
Wins: 11
Draws: 1
Losses: 0
The best home team by far in the tournament's history are Season two winners U Mumba. They have not lost a single match at home in the league stage, and their home form has helped them catapult to the final of each season.
The third season saw U Mumba struggling at 4th spot before the final leg. However, the team led by Anup Kumar won all their matches at home to replace Patna Pirates at the top of the table ahead of the semis. Telugu Titans, Dabang Delhi, Bengal Warriors and derby rivals Puneri Paltan all failed to avoid a defeat at the NSCI Stadium as U Mumba slayed everyone who came in their path.
The second season also saw the Mumbai outfit win all their matches at home, en route to the title in 2015. The only team to have prevented them from taking all points at home are Telugu Titans in Season 1 as the teams played out a 35-35 draw. U Mumba did lose at home to Jaipur Pink Panthers in the final of the inaugural season, but they have been indomitable in front of their fans in the league stage.
U Mumba's record in the capital of Maharashtra remains the most envious record in Star Sports Pro Kabaddi history. After three seasons, the world is still waiting for the reigning champions to suffer a loss at home in the league stage.
