Manchester United are set for a busy summer of transfer activity this summer, with the clubs new manager tasked with rebuilding a squad that slumped from first place to seventh in the space of a season.Likely to be Louis Van Gaal, the new boss will have to strengthen across the board if he is to improve Uniteds fortunes next season in order to compete with Arsenal, Manchester City, Chelsea and a resurgent Liverpool side. The news, therefore, that reportedManchester United target Marco Reus is staying at Borussia Dortmundis not likely to have gone well at Old Trafford, with the club now having to look at other midfield reinforcements. We take a look at three other potential additions that could take the place of Reus at Old Trafford next season.
#1 Ross Barkley
One of the division’s standout young players this season, Ross Barkley is the most exciting youngster to come out of Everton since current United star Wayne Rooney.
His breakthrough season saw Barkley score six goals, including a 70 yard solo run against Newcastle, and complete 80 take ons.
He wouldn’t come cheap, but would provide a direct option and creative spark in attacking midfield areas. Less developed than Reus, having played just one full season of league football, he offers a similar ability to take people on as well as potential for long term improvement.
#2 Isco
Left out of the Spain squad for the World Cup this week, Real Madrid midfielder Isco could be a big money option to add to United’s midfield options. Like Reus, Isco has provided chances-a-plenty this season, but he has failed to hold down a regular place in the Real Madrid side since his move last summer.
United were said to be interested in the Spaniard prior to his move to Madrid and are likely to be monitoring his situation in Madrid. The 22 year old made 31 La Liga appearances, of which just nine were full games, for Carlo Ancelotti’s side this season, scoring eight goals and creating 67 chances.
#3 Alexis Sanchez
Another player struggling to secure a regular starting place in La Liga, Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks, with Arsenal said to be interested in the Chilean.
Despite scoring 18 goals last season, Sanchez’s chances at Barcelona are likely to be limited next season. If he is available, then Arsenal will surely have competition for his signature and with United in the market for an attacking midfield player and with the budget to match, Sanchez could be a good fit at Old Trafford.
