Little does the world know, Mychal Thompson, dad of Klay Thompson was the No.1 pick in the 1978 NBA Draft. He was picked by the Trailblazers and won two NBA championships with the LA Lakers in ‘87 and ‘88. His middle son Klay Thompson is catching up to him after he won his first NBA championship last season.
Mychal scored close to 14,000 points and had around 7500 rebounds before he retired in 1991. He backed up Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the showtime Lakers and he was one of the four No.1 picks Lakers had in the roster.
Klay has 5500 points entering his 5th season and this duo will move up the ladder as Klay continues to excel as a NBA player. He is one of the best two-way guards currently in the NBA. With a picture perfect shooting motion, he is improving every game he plays in the NBA.
#4 Jimmy Walker & Jalen Rose
During 1970s, Jimmy Walker averaged 16.7 points and 3.5 assists during his nine-year career and played two NBA All-Star games. His son Jalen Rose part of Michigan’s fab five had an equally successful career in the NBA. However, Jalen Rose would be always remembered as a part of fab 5 from Michigan that included Chris Webber and Juwan Howard.
They are the first father-son combination in which each player has scored 10,000 NBA points. Rose, the Most Improved Player in 2000 had a great run with the Pacers during the early 2000s. He played in the NBA finals and averaged 20 points in that period alongside Reggie Miller. The team eventually lost to the Lakers in the finals.
Jalen Rose averaged 14.3 points, 3.8 assists and 3.5 rebounds. His dad, a guard in the '60s and '70s mostly with Detroit and Kansas City, scored 11,655 points. Unlike the other duos in the list, Rose did not grow up with his dad. Walker was his biological father but he did not raise Rose. Nevertheless, Rose had a good NBA career and he is presently the ambassador for the retired NBA players union.
#3 Dell Curry & Steph Curry
Stephen Curry is having a season for the ages and the Warriors are having the best start of the season ever. He is regarded as the best basketball shooter ever but his dad was right up there during his basketball career. Dell Curry retired as the all-time leading scorer of the Charlotte Hornets.
Dell Curry averaged 11 points a game, on 40 percent three's and 84 percent free throws. Dell also won the Sixth Man of the Year award for his solid play during the '93-'94 season.
Stephen Curry is the reigning MVP, the current NBA champion and had an All-NBA first team selection last season. He is averaging 32 points and 5.7 assists while shooting 51% FG and 44% 3-PT in the first 15 games of the season. This duo would be moving up to No.1 as Steph continues his magical career. They are the second father-son combination in which each player has scored 10,000 NBA points.
Seth Curry, younger brother of Steph is now playing for Sacramento Kings. He is figuring out his NBA career and as always the Currys have been slow starters but known to finish high.
#2 Joe Bryant & Kobe Bryant
The average basketball fan knows that Kobe is bilingual and can speak Italian in addition to English. This is because his father played basketball professionally in Italy. But Joe “Jellybean” Bryant was drafted 14th in the 1975 NBA draft by the Warriors. He put up 8.7 points and four rebounds a game during his eight-year career.
Kobe needs no introduction, he is considered to be one of the top 10 players ever to have played the game. Kobe has one MVP award, two Finals MVP Awards and five NBA championships. He has managed to be selected to an All-NBA team an astounding 13 times and an All-Defensive team 11 times. He has played in 13 All-Star games resulting in four All-Star MVP Awards.
It is amazing that you cannot write about anything or anyone related to Kobe without being astounded by his success and personality. The legend of Kobe might be drawing to an end so enjoy it while you can.
#1 Rick & Brent Barry
Rick Barry was named to be one of the fifty greatest players of all time in 1996 and in the same year Brent Barry won the Slam Dunk championship. Rick was a superstar in this league, Brent had a good career winning, 2 NBA championships during his stint. Rick other sons, Jon and Drew, also play in the NBA but Brent had a more successful career comparatively.
In the NBA, Rick averaged over 23 points, six rebounds and five assists in his 10 NBA seasons. He also had eight NBA All-Star appearances, five All-NBA first team selections, one NBA championship and one Finals MVP Award. Rick also played four seasons in the ABA in which he averaged over 30 points, seven rebounds and four assists a game.
Brent Barry is easily the best Barry behind his father, averaging over nine points, three rebounds and three assists a game during his 14-year career. During this time Brent won championships with the Spurs making them the second father-son duo to win a NBA championship. Mat Guokas, Sr. and Jr. are the first father-son duo to achieve this feat.
The other two sons, Jon and Drew played 14 years and 3 years respectively, but both were role players, unlike their brother and superstar dad.
