Any resemblances? It wouldn't be very out of place to see the world of professional wrestling told in a comic book way, considering the shared similarities.Completely contradictory characters, odd settings, made up powers and completely awesome duels, the similarities are immense, not to mention all the whacky stories. Don't take it the wrong way; I myself am a huge comic book fan, and naturally, I think a lot about wrestling figures who somewhat resemble superheroes or supervillains, and I have managed to compile a list of five of these, and for those of you who aren’t hardcore comic book fans, I will try explaining them as well as I can.Note: Just because Roman Reigns uses a move called the “Superman Punch”, it does not make him anything like Superman.Honourable mentions:John Cena – Superman (not really close)Mister America (his real identity is still a mystery) – Captain AmericaRey Mysterio – Mysterio (A Spider-Man villain)Dean Ambrose – The Joker
#5 CM Punk - Wolverine
Unlike every other entry on this list, this one is mostly just for looks.
And to be more specific, not the actual Wolverine look, but Fox Studios’ Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman in the X-Men movies and his stand-alone movies. And even in terms of CM Punk, this is only the mid-2013 to early-2014 Punk being compared, because that was when he had the famous sideburns.
However, let’s attempt to look past that.
Wolverine is one of the most over-powered Marvel characters in existence. He has the power to regenerate, and at one point regenerated from a single molecule. He virtually cannot die (even though, thanks to the amazing world of comic books, he has died before). Now that is pretty much the same way some fans view CM Punk, and I am not exaggerating.
CM Punk is considered a god by some wrestling fans, and a lot of that is because he really did change wrestling back in 2011, and also because he is simply considered to be a god at everything he does in wrestling, be it talking, playing a role or the wrestling itself, a lot of people take his “Best In The World” gimmick and make it exactly so.
#4 Bray Wyatt - Scarecrow
I had initially planned on comparing Bray Wyatt with Galactus, Marvel’s own Eater Of Worlds (however, this was quite literal), but I decided a closer match would be DC’s Scarecrow, or by his real name, Jonathan Crane.
Scarecrow is a lot like Bray Wyatt. He does not often directly get involved in hand-to-hand combat with Batman, his most prominent enemy, but rather tries to scare him to a point of no return. Being a doctor in the field of psychology himself, Crane uses a special drug which he created to execute this.
The drug, when exposed to anyone, emphasises their greatest fears and phobias to extreme lengths and then tears them apart from the inside.
Bray Wyatt uses a tactic of mind games to get into his opponents’ heads and uses this as a direct advantage to himself. He uses fear in different ways, suited to different people, such as making The Undertaker seemed like past his prime, and consistently using the words “Anyone but you” to Roman Reigns.
#3 Seth Rollins - Loki Laufeyson
This seems like a match made in heaven, it really does. Loki Laufeyson is the adopted brother of Thor Odinson (explained later in the article) and is based on Norse Mythology (also explained later in this article).
He is the Norse god of magic and lying, and the latter seems like something that would fit perfectly to Seth Rollins’ current persona. Loki is a villain who doesn’t often do the dirty work himself, but rather hides behind something that is doing it for him, but he is the brains of the operation.
Sound familiar?
Seth Rollins is a lying, cheating heel who will do anything to win, be it honourable or not. He often runs away from his fights or hides behind someone else, being Stephanie McMahon and Triple H, along with the rest of The Authority.
And not to mention, Loki is arguably the most popular cinematic Marvel character, thanks in large part to Tom Hiddleston’s portrayal, and Seth Rollins is also one of WWE’s most popular wrestlers on the internet.
#2 Brock Lesnar - Doomsday
It’s very easy to associate Brock Lesnar with The Hulk, but I’ve taken it a step further.
Doomsday is an ancient Kryptonian being, who originates long before Superman and is a deadly creature created at a time when Krypton was a hellish planet. He technically is a monster, and due to an immeasurable number of crimes, he was banished and shot into space.
Coincidentally, he landed on Earth and his arrival drilled him underground, where he would emerge an evolved being from his previous self to attack the Justice League (without Superman) and eliminate them all very quickly. Superman would then turn his attention to him, and things went sour.
This is why I made a direct comparison between Lesnar and Doomsday because Doomsday did what was never meant to happen. In the heat of the enraged battle between the two, Superman realised that Doomsday was indeed a match for him, the fight went on for a long time.
In the end, Doomsday did die, but, with him died Superman. Even though, of course, Superman was brought back to life, his death was something nobody saw coming, and it shook the DC world.
In the same way, Brock Lesnar, a powerful monster in his own right, killed something, and that was The Undertaker’s Streak. Who saw that coming? Pretty much nobody and it shook the world of professional wrestling. Quite a few similarities here.
#1 Triple H - Thor Odinson
This cannot just be a coincidence. I mean, it just can’t. It’s not just the physical characteristics I am talking about.
Thor is a blonde-haired, bulked up, Chris Hemsworth-like God of Thunder. His origins go back in Norse mythology, and the entire concept of his universe and Marvel’s greater cosmic universe (which has already been seen in a few of their movies) is based off of the nine realms from Norse mythology, and is pretty accurate in that context.
Odin, king of the gods of Asgard, has Thor as his blood son and Thor himself is destined to be king one day. His powers are mainly focused around his hammer, Mjolnir, which only the worthy can lift, and interestingly, there have been quite a few in the past, but none have been so prominently related to the object as Thor himself.
Now, let’s look at Triple H, who is also a blonde-haired, muscular man, who is, wonderfully, most associated with a sledgehammer, of all objects. But let’s look past that. Triple H is also destined to be the leader of the giant organisation that is the WWE one day, just like Thor and Asgard.
And both look to rule with an iron fist, or should I say, an imposing hammer. This isn’t a resemblance, this is more like being the other person.
