This has certainly been the year of the strikers. With the top teams much more inclined to play two up front, the forwards have certainly been getting plenty of support. Although the race for the Golden Boot is probably sewn up already, it takes nothing away from the quality of forwards or their finishing ability. Here are the top five forwards in the Premier League this season.
#1 Luis Suarez
Coming into the season, on the back of a lengthy ban, few could have expected what Suarez would go on to do. Fewer still predicted that he would even be at the club given the number of clubs he was attracting. But, whatever the reason for him staying on, Suarez has certainly established himself as one of the finest forwards in the World. In the opening 12 League games of the season Suarez had already scored 19 goals, including five braces and two hat-tricks.
And by the New Year, the Uruguayan had already managed 20 goals and five assists in the League, whilst developing a fearsome partnership with Sturridge. So far, he has scored 24 goals in 23 games and with more than a quarter of the season left, it should come as no surprise if he obliterates the current record for most goals in a single season.
#2 Daniel Sturridge
Anybody that had seen Daniel Sturridge play, from a very young age would tell you that he was supremely gifted. His talent was never really in question, but his temperament was. That and his lack of playing time led to him moving from City to Chelsea before finally ending up Liverpool last January. Ever since he started playing for the Reds, the English forward has had a new-found belief and a consistent run of games certainly did him no harm.
After ending last season on a high, Sturridge started this campaign from where he left off last season. His ruthlessness in front of goal has seen him score 18 League goals already this season to go along with his five assists. His run of scoring in eight-straight League games was only broken last weekend against Southampton. And from being a Chelsea discard, the 24-year-old has developed into a shoe-in for the England squad for Brazil.
#3 Sergio Aguero
Sergio Aguero will always be remembered, by not just City fans, but by the entire League as well for scoring that famous goal that decided one of the most exciting finishes to a League campaign of all-time. Although Aguero scored in City’s opening League game, he had to wait another month before he got his second, which was a brace against cross-town rivals United.
Since then, Aguero has managed to rack up 15 goals and five assists in just 15 League starts and has established himself as the number one forward at City, no mean feat in itself. Injury meant that he didn’t play a single game in February, but the fact that he is still third on the goalscoring charts, speaks volumes for his ability and the season he has had.
#4 Wayne Rooney
One of the major talking points last summer was whether Wayne Rooney would stay or leave. Once that was resolved, Rooney has gone onto show just why United recently rewarded him with a lucrative deal until 2019. Although he has suffered several setbacks this season, he has still, arguably, been United’s best player this season.
Whilst he only has 10 goals to his name, his nine assists mean that he is second, only behind Suarez in the assists chart. This season, Rooney has, on more than one occasion, taken it upon himself to drag his team across the finish line. Although that hasn’t been enough, had it not been for the Englishman, United would have been in deeper trouble than they are in now.
#5 Loic Remy
While the other four players on the list have a more rounded game than the Frenchman, Remy has shown time and again as to why Newcastle sought his signature so keenly. Although there are only seven sides in the League, who have conceded more than the Magpies, Remy's 13 goals have meant that they now stand a legitimate chance of finishing the season in a European place.
Although there have been games in which Remy was almost non-existent, the Frenchman has always been there at the right place at the right time for the Magpies. Without his goals, Newcastle would have been struggling near the bottom of the table and that speaks volumes for the forward's finishing prowess.
