#1 Geoff Hurst vs Germany 1966 World Cup Final
This has to be one of the most controversial goals of all time. It was and continues to be a catalyst in the tense football relations shared between England and Germany. The 1966 World Cup final was tense as the German’s had managed to score an equalizing goal which kept the scores at 2-2 right into extra time. English striker Hurst unleashed a thunderous strike which hit the crossbar and then rebounded down on the goal line and then back out. The goal was given by referee Gottfried Dientst much to the surprise of the spectators and the 400 million viewers who had different views about the goal. Hurst managed to score another goal later which made the scores 4-2 giving England their first and only World Cup to date.

#2 Frank Lampard vs Germany 2010 FIFA World Cup
A ghost goal was the bone of contention once again in a match between England and Germany – this time in the 2010 World Cup but unlike last time the referee’s decision was in favour of the Germans. The Three Lions were trailing the Germans 2-1 before Frank Lampard unleashed a powerful strike from 20 yards which hit the cross bar and then bounced a little over the goal line before Neuer parried the ball away. It was a clear goal but the referee and the linesman disagreed and the goal was disallowed much to the chagrin of the English players and their fans. England’s misery didn’t end there and they conceded 2 more goals which knocked them out of the tournament.

#3 Luis Garcia vs Chelsea 2005 Champions League semi-final
The Spaniard became a fan favourite at Liverpool due to his knack for scoring important goals but Chelsea fans won’t have too many fond memories of him. On that fateful day none of the teams had scored yet but Liverpool began to counterattack and Steven Gerrard entered the penalty area but his shot was blocked by Cech who came out of his goal. However none of the defenders cleared the ball and Luis Garcia charged in and fired the ball toward the goal. Blues defender William Gallas cleared the ball but the referee though the ball had crossed the line and awarded a goal to Liverpool. Chelsea were knocked out 1-0 on aggregate and Liverpool reached the finals against AC Milan. The rest is history.

#4 Pedro Mendes v Manchester United 2005
This goal was disallowed as a result of one of the worst refereeing decisions ever. The horrendous incident occurred during a match between Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in 2005, Mendes hit a brilliant shot from 50 yards towards United’s goal which went in after the Red Devils’ keeper Roy Carroll dropped the ball but the referee didn’t award the goal to Tottenham. Spurs fans were furious at the referee which was justified as the replays clearly showed the ball crossing the goal line. The incident is commonly known as “the goal that never was”.

#5 Sulley Muntari vs Juventus
This controversial incident occurred during the Serie A match between Juventus and AC Milan. Milan’s Muntari hammered in a close range header which Juve keeper Buffon managed to parry away but the ball appeared to cross the line a bit. The referee didn’t allow the goal and the match ended in a draw. Juventus beat Milan to the title by three points and many critics agreed that the disallowed goal could have changed things. Replays showed that the ball had crossed the line by at least 30 meters.
