The longstanding championIt looks like Vince McMahon is set on making sure not only Roman Reigns becomes WWE’s World Champion, but he remains the top face in the company. A report on wrestlechat.net suggests Reigns and his soon to be opponent at Survivor Series, Seth Rollins, had other ideas that were nixed by the Chairman of the Board. Also read: Seth Rollins: 5 ways the babyface can become the next CM punkThe idea of a Rollins and Reigns doing a double turn — Rollins would turn babyface and Reigns would turn heel — was pitched to Vince McMahon by a WWE producer and quickly rejected. Fans shouldn’t expect any changes to be made to Reigns’ character in the near future since it’s something McMahon is extremely stubborn about. He is determined to make Reigns into a WWE Superstar that fans will accept. The build for this match has been slow and steady. The fans are finally growing to support Reigns as a viable champion contender. Rollins, sans Bray Wyatt, is the best heel going today. Why would the company change the current format that appears to be working?I thought this might be an option heading into the Royal Rumble and possible WrestleMania 32 where there was a double flip, where Reigns gets more heat to solidify his role as the new leader of the band. It may have been kicked around as a potential option had the outcome of Hell in a Cell, followed by the past two weeks on RAW were rejected by fans in the stands. So far, it seems to be working.Kudos to the creative team that has written a nice arc to a story we all have thought was a nightmare for so long.So what happens to Seth Rollins if he loses the WWE World Title? Scratch that, when he loses the WWE World Title? Yes, there will be a rematch (there is always a rematch at another WWE pay-per-view). But Vince and the boys are not going to give Reigns the strap and then take it away from him one month later. That would defeat the purpose of all these shenanigans. Rollins is white hot as the heel but Reigns and Dean Ambrose want to bury. So what happens once the belt is removed from the waist of the current champion? Here are a few ideas.
#1 The Face Turn
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
WWE in its own way had been teasing this since Stephanie McMahon uttered these words on Raw before SummerSlam. “You are good, but you are not Triple H.”
The disconnection between Rollins and his relationship between McMahon and Triple H has not been explored to the extent that could lead to a fracture with the Authority or an eventual divorce from the angle altogether.
There has also been talk of a Triple H-Rollins match that was supposed to happen at SummerSlam. That too did not happen, and was replaced by the John Cena match where Rollins retained the company title and won the US Title.
Thanks, Jon Stewart.
Rollins as a face makes sense, but right now, his heel character is perfect for the climate of the company and how the fans react to Reigns as a new leader of WWE. In time, this should happen, but not right now. And when it does, would it mean another reunion with former Shield members, Reigns, Dean Ambrose or both?
#2 A feud with Kevin Owens
Another angle the company must explore. When Rollins asked Owens to join him in the 5-on-5 elimination match on Monday night, he alluded to a Rollins vs. Owens WrestleMania match. It did have a nice ring to it and the two heels would eventually become opponents.
It’s a match we can all get behind. If WWE, most notably Vince McMahon, is set to promote the next generation of superstars, then Owens must be part of the revolution (I hate that word, but it fits nicely here). Rollins could remain a heel and Owens could become a face at some point as well.
No matter how you slice it, this kind of rivalry would help the fan base grow.
Owens came into the company from NXT with an explosion, has claimed the Intercontinental Title and has cooled a bit as the champion. At times, it seems like this belt is more of a curse than a reward. Make the title mean something again? It used to be the second most important belt in the company – show it is again. While Alberto Del Rio is carrying around the United States Title, it is not the more important strap in the company anymore.
See what happens when John Cena runs away?
Rollins-Owens is must-see television, err pay-per-view.
#3 Feuding with someone else
Rollins work on the microphone makes it hard to listen to him. The voice, the smarmy approach – it’s something I could do without. The one thing in his arsenal that does not make him sound like the champion he should be is the tone of his voice.
As my daughter would say, Ewww.
There are plenty of wrestlers on the roster who could help promote a solid feud with Rollins that are not named Reigns, Ambrose of Cena. We have already talked about Owens. Del Rio is an option if he is elevated to the top spot as the company heel. All of this is predicated on the eventual face turn we talked about.
While he is caught in what appears to be another love triangle (should it bother me, that Tyler Breeze is prettier than Summer Rae) Dolph Ziggler would sell the hell out of a feud with Rollins. I thought WWE might consider putting Ziggler back in the world title picture when he was in the Fatal Four Way match two weeks ago with Reigns, Owens and Del Rio. Clearly the best final segment match to be aired on Raw in some time.
If the creative team ever gets its head out of its backside, this is a main event waiting to happen.
Another possibility is feud with Daniel Bryan if and when he returns to action. Bryan is going to need a mega-event to kick start the return of the “YES!” Movement. Would this suffice? For it to work, it must be void of The Authority and Bryan must be able to return to his former self. Anything else is a letdown for both performers and the fans.
Another possibility is Samoa Joe or someone from the outside coming in. If WWE were to re-sign Jeff Hardy, it would be a feud that could sell as a main event-type match at WrestleMania.
