WWE’s divas division might not be the best place to be. Despite having some exceptional talent in there, the company has been messing up things for a long time but the truth is: it wasn’t always like this. The Attitude era and some of the years that followed saw many great divas rivalries in the company and some even got enough heat to outclass the other angles involving ‘male’ superstars as well. There is a lot of criticism about how the writers book the women now and a lot of that has to do with the rich past these girls have had. So here is a dig into that same past to see which all were the best divas rivalries that we saw in WWE.
#10 Trish Stratus vs Molly Holly
Trust me! You are going to see a lot of Trish Stratus in this list and this is only the start. Trish and Molly locked horns against eachother for the Women’s championship back in 2002 when Molly won the title from Trish.
Trish then went on to claim that Molly had a big butt and even though it might sound a bit awkward right now, it was some great television angle back then due to the amount of differences between the two girls.
Molly being in her prime was one of the reasons for the feud’s success. They had many great matches in a feud that spanned over three months and it eventually ended with Trish getting back the championship.
#9 Chyna vs Ivory
Ivory was part of this cool stable named Right to Censor. The faction which was led by Stevie Richards wanted to make WWE programming more apt for children so when Chyna posed for the Playboy magazine in 2000, they wanted to make an example out of her.
Chyna was frequently lectured about why she shouldn’t have posed for the magazine. One of the attacks from Right to Censor sidelined Chyna for weeks but the Ninth Wonder returned next year to get the title from Ivory at Royal Rumble 2001.
That didn’t happen since Chyna reinjured herself in that match but the two locked horns once again at WrestleMania 17 where Chyna squashed Ivory in under ten seconds to win her first Women’s championship.
#8 Beth Phoenix vs Melina
Beth was probably one of the most dominant Divas that WWE has seen after the Attitude Era. She had the power and actually knew how to wrestle a match. Beth, Mickie James and Melina feuded for the Divas title back in 2008 and in the triple threat match that they had at Judgment Day, Mickie came out victorious.
So WWE had to pick a No.1 contender for the championship which made them book Beth and Melina in a first ever women’s I quit match at Extreme Rules 2008.
It turned out to be one of the best divas match in a long time and the fans were in it from start to end. Both women gave out their best to ensure that they were not going to be seconded by any other men on the roster.
#7 Trish Stratus vs Stephanie McMahon
Trish Stratus got involved with Vince McMahon when Linda McMahon was in a coma and bounded to a wheelchair. Trish repeatedly kissed Vince in front of his wife and even took away the flowers and candy that Linda had with her.
Stephanie obviously didn’t like what Trish was doing with her parent and went out on a full blown feud. There were some classic moments of Stephanie pouring sewage into Trish and the match quality also stood out.
The feud ran to WrestleMania X-Seven where Trish finally turned on Vince McMahon. In the night that followed, Trish got a win over Stephanie which made the company end this feud abruptly for some reason.
#6 AJ Lee vs Kaitlyn
The friction between Kaitlyn and AJ Lee dates back to their run in NXT season three. Once these two divas got into the main roster and started feuding in the summer of 2013, it ended up being the best offering from PG Era.
Storyline started off when Kaitlyn got messages from a secret admirer. She finally found out that Big E, AJ Lee’s bodyguard, was the person, but he left Kaitlyn humiliated in the ring without kissing her.
This sparked the angle between two divas and ran all the way to the end of the year. The fans saw some solid matches with the one these two had at Payback being the best from the lot.
Kaitlyn eventually left the company after this feud leaving AJ with nothing but the Total divas cast to feud with.
#5 Sable vs Luna
Divas getting as popular as a male superstar are a rarity in professional wrestling but Sable broke that tradition when she reached the heights of Steve Austin and Rock back in the Attitude Era. Initially, in 1998, she hung around her former husband Marc Mero and was becoming more popular than him.
When Mero and Sable started to feud with the other wrestler –valet duo of Goldust and Luna, the fans realized that Sable had more to her than just her looks.
Luna and Sable also had the first ever Evening gown match in WWE which Luna won. They feuded again in 1999 but this feud will always go down in history for increasing the stock of Sable in the business.
#4 Dawn Marie vs Torrie Wilson
There have been many lesbian angles in professional wrestling, but this probably was the hottest one. Dawn Marie lost a bikini contest to Torrie in 2002 and she wanted revenge. The path she chose was to marry Torrie’s father, Al Wilson.
Dawn and Al started dating right in front of Torrie and despite the mental advantage of the former, Torrie was getting win in all the matches they had.
At one point, Torrie even agreed to meet Dawn in a hotel room so that her father would be left alone. Dawn never kept her promise and went on to marry Al, who died due to a heart attack on their honeymoon.
#3 Trish Stratus vs Victoria
Victoria made her debut in WWE in 2002 and went right after the women’s championship of Trish Stratus. Her first attempt went in vain, but that proved to be the turning point of the feud.
What we saw after that was a more aggressive Victoria who would go on to use Steel chairs and kendo sticks to destroy the beautiful face of Trish. This led to a hardcore match between the two at Survivor Series that year.
There were many foreign objects used in the match including a glass mirror which was supposed to be the ending spot, but broke due to a misstep in between. Victoria came out winning the title. They continued to feud with each other but WWE introduced other divas into the mix which took away the initial aura.
#2 Trish Stratus vs Mickie James
WWE introduced Mickie James to the fans as an obsessed fan of Trish Stratus. Things between Trish and Mickie were toned down initially but as time went by, it was clearly turning out to be a lesbian angle between the two.
They had their first match in New Year’s Revolution of 2006 where Trish got the win. The ignorance of Trish eventually made Mickie snap and the company worked the feud all the way to WrestleMania.
The match turned out to be a controversial one due to the underlying sexual tone that was there in it, but because of the brilliance of both the divas, it was appreciated for the in-ring action as well.
#1 Trish Stratus vs Lita
This is still the bench mark for the entire divas feud that WWE is going to produce. Trish and Lita are synonymous with the divas division due to many reasons and the amount of emotion that they had in the feud was a big one.
It started when Lita was the member of team extreme while Trish managed Test and Albert. After some mixed tag team matches, the two divas went on to have a singles feud against each other which even had the first ever Bra and Panties match.
The angle ran through the major portion of 2000 and 2001 and the fans never got bored. Divas division skyrocketed due to this feud and even now, the fans would love to see Lita and Trish step in between the ropes for one last match.
They even got to main event Monday Night Raw and with the Women’s Championship on the line, Lita defeated Trish to become the new champion. It was the time first time ever that the show was concluded by a match between two Divas.
