For all the unpredictability and surprises that have been lost with the arrival and the dominance of social media and dirt sheets available and accurate more than ever, WWE has had a few surprises that hit bulls eye.To their credit, they used social media to make more speculations and they either came true or they didn’t but whatever did take place eventually was awesome. Here are the five best teases of this year.
#5 Lesnar fighting at the Elimination Chamber
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
After the super flop decision to let Batista win the Rumble, WWE began its build towards hyping up Elimination Chamber. Lesnar made appearances and one such appearance had him face to facewith randy Orton and Batista.
All of this happened when Heyman demanded that Lesnar gets an opportunity at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. This gave rise to speculation that Lesnar will compete inside the Elimination Chamber against the likes of Cesaro, Orton, Cena, Daniel Bryan and Sheamus. These were interesting scenarios for future feuds.
But alas, none of this happened. Yet, the match was a great bout with a predictable finish with every superstar getting their own moment to shine.
#4 The Cracks In the Shield
The beginning of the year saw Reigns being pushed more into the limelight amongst his brethren and Ambrose getting a bit derailed and the tension between these two exposed the cracks in the Shield with Seth Rollins trying to calm things down between the two. Reigns, to add to all this, eliminated both Ambrose and Rollins at the Royal Rumble.
Reigns was thriving at this time of the year and then there was this one moment when Rollins left his team members high and dry in the middle of the tag match against the Wyatts to hold The Shield Summit on Smackdown where they got their issues sorted. And then they were as great as ever. the original days were back.
The undying speculation of a break were dying and it was then that it finally happened not at the hands of Ambrose or Ambrose and Rollins together but Rollins alone. What a moment that turned out to be.
#3 Will They/Won\'t They angle with Bryan
Daniel Bryan emerged to be the biggest superstar in the beginning of this year. the yes Movement was the greatest thing going in WWE. Fans were going berserk. And then with Punk’s departure, and Batista’s disappointing return, things looked set for Bryan to have his Wrestlemania moment.
And then Triple H thrived in bringing out the latest keywords surrounding this storyline on the Internet. Words like ‘Reality Era’ or ‘Occupy Raw’ hit the main roster. Triple H took on the role that he has been given online and teased fans aplenty going as far as to say "Why don't you send me a tweet to express your displeasure?"
But then, finally, he was put in a match against Triple H to determine his chance at the main event. And then it was nothing less than a fairytale.
#2 CM Punk Returns?
The March 3rd edition of Raw was a bit different because it happened in Chicago, Cm Punk’s hometown- a man who had reportedly left the company a month and a half ago. Dave meltzer was out with a report that Punk will return in this episode and that the company and Punk have figured out a deal.
He said his source was somebody he trusted in the WWE. And then the episode has Josh Matthews adress Punk’s absence, so do the commentators and so does Paul Heyman. Heyman says straightaway that Punk is not here and the whole night becomes a night of anticipation and then rage. So much so that when The Authority and Bryan had their segment, their voices were drowned out by CM Punk chants and some non-PG chants.
The biggest takeaway was that WWE dealt with it and the show went on. The show always goes on.
Meltzer later said that he was lied to.
#1 Orton returns at Survivor Series
Nope. That didn’t happen.
Survivor series was free on the WWE Netweork and WWE did one heck of a job to sell their product with a stellar show. Orton’s return was anticipated and he was expected to return to beat The Authority. The PPV took place in his hometown and before his departure he was the most entertaining superstar as his promos were on-point and very well performed.
But not only did Ziggler, the perennial fan favorite, become the sole survivor- Sting made his debut and swished Triple H aside.
It was least expected and graciously accepted.
