Here are5little-known facts about the commentary team.
#5 Pro- Wrestling is an avoided word
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
You will never really hear a commentator say the word ‘pro- wrestler’or ‘pro- wrestling’.
That may come off as obvious since Vince McMahon himself is not fond of that word with respect to his talent and his company. It’s all sports entertainment. Over the years, CM Punk has been a great advocate of the word ‘pro- wrestling’ on- screen. But since he’s gone, so has the usage of the word.
The commentary team is told to avoid that word and instead use words like ‘superstar’ or ‘athlete’. But Vince McMahon is also not really an advocate of always using the term sports entertainment. Rather, simply ‘entertainment will work as well.
#4 The Undertaker is not Taker
You may have heard his friends and foes call him Taker on screen, but that is something that the commentators should never use.
The commentators are usually instructed to call somebody by various names they have. The Undertaker can be called the Phenom, The Dead Man or the Demon from Death Valley, but never, ever ever ‘Taker’.
He may be Taker to whoever his opponent is, or to whoever is talking to him on screen or about him off screen. But he’s not really supposed to be Taker to the commentator. Maybe, because the words that the commentators use are the words they want the audience to recognize their superstars with the most.
#3 Don\'t call blood
This is a controversial issue in the company.
The usage of blood in matches has phenomenally decreased and when that has led to being really careful with the usage of blood as and when it happens. The screens and the photographs usually go black and white.
The announcers are strictly instructed not to call blood. Instead of saying that a superstar has been busted open, they’d rather use specific descriptions in what may have happened to the superstar. Like they might have broken a rib, arm or nose.
The recent match between Undertaker and Lesnar at Hell in a Cell shows how vulnerable the commentary team can get in such bloody situations.
#2 Spare the referee
In a wrestling match, the referee is expected to be stupid sometimes. They don’t see illegal moves and let the babyface suffer without their knowledge, they get knocked off quite easily and come off as the weakest link in a match.
But the WWE doesn’t want the commentators to accentuate that foolishness. They don’t want the audience to find the referee’s actions of noticing a particular thing as stupid. They want the commentator to say that the referee is being distracted or his vision was impaired or blocked instead of the fact that he ‘didn’t see it’.
#1 Don\'t be Verbatim
After the long list of instructions at their display, announcers also may be given scripts by the producer of the show, but the WWE encourages announcers to not follow everything per script as they have to let the audience connect with them, and they realize that the audience can differentiate an announcer speaking from a script or not.
They are encouraged to be themselves and be fun and try to bring their own valuable contribution to a particular script, Of course, all of that comes to play after a few terms and conditions are applied.
