The reality Era have posed the biggest challenge ever to pure, virtuous babyfaces. Triple H himself recounted how difficult it is to write for a babyface or book one essentially.Polarizing reactions have become a norm. The audience represents a very ambivalent nature making these characters look highly ambiguous. It’s quite a challenge to get a unanimous reaction for such characters these days. It’s like they’re inhumane.Human beings have flaws and these characters seem perfect unlike the imperfect human race. But anyway, it is essential for such virtuous characters to exist. Here are five reasons why:
#5 Making a great villain
New Champs in WWE! More RIGHT HERE
One of the many signs of a great babyface is his or her ability to make the villain seem that much more villaneous. If people are sympathetic towards you then they don’t want to see you suffer. Sami Zayn is the most popular babyface in NXT and just a few weeks ago he was decimated by Kevin Owens.
Owens is, at the moment, the most hated man in NXT. He does have his own cult and the KO T-Shirts are more visible than ever but part of the success of his demonic character is the way Zayn sold his attack.
#4 Relativity
Sure, the babyfaces seem much less flawed than an average human being, but keeping in mind that inside their hearts the majority of the world is good, the audeince will support someone who they think more or less represents them. When John Cena was at the peak of his babyface career where the majority reactions were cheers than boos, he was relatable as he was seemed like someone from the streets trying to climb atop the WWE ladder. He looked quite ordinary in front of other regular superstars but he was entertaining with his rap gimmick.
Daniel Bryan also paid his dues to reach where he is. He made his name in lesser known places and finally reached WWE only to be obviously questioned about his build and almost always having an air of rejection and road blocks to reach the top of the mountain. This is something that so many people deal with in tehir lives. That struggle is something that makes them believes in someone facing the same thing.
The fans rallied for him to be given a chance and that support hasn’t waned away.
#3 Trust
Gaining the audience’s trust is the most difficult challenge. Winning them over is something that may not happen overnight. To gain their trust, one needs to perform well both on one’s character and the matches.
Ever heard of the term ‘a dog in the fight’?
It means that they place their trust on you and hope in their heart of hearts that you win. It’s as if they have a stake of their on in the match. They have something to care about. And if you’re successful, they keep betting on you. That’s some long term engagement there and fans will get hooked on to see what you’re upto everytime.
#2 Sympathy
Sympathy is a very important ingredient for a long term fan engagement. Once you’ve gained thier trust, the fan base is stronger than ever for the star but they also need to get used to the hard times.
They need to get used to the star not coming through a match victorious and to make the villain look really villaneous, the babyface has to have the sympathy of the audience. It is important that the audience understands the plights of the face and sympathizes with his/her situation and expects them to rise above it and be an inspiration.
#1 The Art of Wrestling
Wrestling, in all its originality, has always been about the good versus the evil and larger perspective being that the good always triumps against the evil. It tries to be representative of the society one lives in but as being an activity which has spectatorship, it is essentially about enjoyment and leisure. So the ending of a story always has the good guy beat the bad guy and overcome all the trials and tribulations. It gives hope that bad days don’t last.
